JDCC falls to Bishop and Enterprise

What looked like an end to their six-game losing streak Monday night at home for the Jefferson Davis Warhawks ended with less than a second to play in the game as the Warhawks lost to Bishop State 85-76 in overtime.
Holding a 70-68 lead with 5.9 seconds left to play after two made free throws by Damien Jackson, Bishop State called a timeout after the second free throw to inbound the ball.
After in bounding the ball under the Warhawks goal, Bishop in bounded the ball and called timeout to get the ball at half court with 3.6 seconds left to play.
After the timeout, Bishop banked the tying basket with .9 seconds left to play and forced the game into overtime.
In the overtime period, JDCC was outscored 15-6 in five minutes and was 1-for-6 shooting free throws while Bishop State was 8-for-16 in the period.
JDCC trailed 74-73 with 2:19 left to play, but after a Bishop State 5-0 run to take a 79-73 lead with 1:12 left after two missed free throws by the Warhawks could have cut the lead to two points and ended the run.
JDCC got as close as 79-76 with 56 seconds left to play but missed shot and rebounds later in the game to suffer the loss.
The loss dropped JDCC to 3-13 overall and to 2-6 in conference play with their seventh straight loss.
Despite the overtime loss, Gainer said the team gave a great effort.
JDCC trailed 34-33 after the first half in a half that saw neither team hold a bigger lead than four points.
JDCC was 4-for-9 from the free throw line in the first half while Bishop was 3-for-6.
In the second half, JDCC outscored Bishop 37-36 to force the game into overtime after the late second shot by the Wildcats.
Bishop State and JDCC both had runs of 10-0 in the second half as the Warhawks fought back from being down 12 points with 7:05 left to play to tie the game up at the 4:41 mark.
Both team would alternate points down the stretch and the game ended up being tied 70-70 to force overtime.
JDCC finished 10-of-21 from the free throw line in the game and Bishop State was 17-of-30.
Jackson led with 23 points, and all six points in the overtime period, in the dramatic game and Marquis Williams added 20 points.
Logan Campbell added 10 points along with Jayme Goddin and Kentrail Brown had eight points in the loss.
Zaviar Likely added three points and Dennis Miller added two points.
Enterprise 80, JDCC 75
In close games, it takes all the shots that you can get and most importantly, free throws.
In a Thursday night game at home for the Jefferson Davis Community College Warhawk basketball team, the Warhawks lost 80-75 to Enterprise to fall to 3-14 overall and to 2-7 in conference play.
The stat that stuck out in the game was 7-of-19 from the free throw line for the Warhawks, 2-of-8 in the second half, compared to Enterprise’s 7-of-10 in the game.
JDCC trailed 44-41 after the first half of play Thursday night and was outscored 36-34 in the second half to lose by five points.
In the close first half, Enterprise built leads of six points twice and held a seven-point lead over JDCC with 5:28 left to play at 36-29.
JDCC would cut the lead to 38-33 with 4:18 left to play before going on a 7-0 run to claim a 40-38 lead with 2:02 left before halftime.
From that point, JDCC would be outscored 6-1 to end the half down by four points heading into the locker rooms at halftime.
In the second half, the two teams alternated points until after being tied 51-51 with 15:07 left to play in the game, Enterprise went on an 8-0 run to take a 59-51 lead with 11:57 left to play.
The Boll weevils would hold a 64-55 lead with 9:44 left before JDCC went on an 8-0 run of their own to cut the lead to 64-63 with 8:06 to play.
The Warhawks would later tie the game up at 68-68 with 5:58 left in the game after a 5-0 run.
From that point, JDCC went 1-for-4 from the free throw line and had two buckets from the floor while Enterprise connected for a 6-0 run to take a 76-70 lead with 2:29 left to play to help seal the win by five points.
JDCC was 2-for-8 in the second half from the line and 5-for-11 in the first half while Enterprise was 3-of-4 in the first half and 4-of-6 from the line in the second half.
Kentrail Brown led the Warhawks in scoring with 21 points and was joined in double figures by three other Warhawks as Logan Campbell had 18, Damien Jackson had 11, and Marquis Williams added 10 points.
Dennis Miller poured in eight points and Jayme Goddin added seven points in the loss for the Warhawks.
JDCC will be back in action on the road at Southern Union on Monday at 7 p.m. before returning home on Thursday, Feb. 4, against Wallace Selma at 7 p.m.
