After two delays over several weeks, the committee for the East Escambia Relay for Life will finally be able to hold the “Bark for Life” event this weekend at Burnt Corn Park.
Sharon Peacock, Relay for Life chairwoman and committee member, said the event is planned for Saturday to help raise funds for the American Cancer Society.
The event is planned for a 9 a.m. start with registration in the park with opening ceremonies at 10 a.m., Peacock said.
The event is open to the public and not just to pet owners, Peacock said. The event will give the community a chance to help raise funds for the fight against cancer and have an opportunity to win something in return.
Peacock said numbered bones will be dropped by crane into a large dog bowl with the bone landing in or closest to the bowl will win the cash prize.
The Believers, a Relay team comprised of employees of The Brewton Medical Center, will also use the event to help in their fund raising efforts.
A yard sale will be held at Burn Corn Park beginning at 7 a.m. The group will also have the newly published BMC Cookbook available at the yard sale and the Bark for Life event.
The Believers Cook Book is filled with a variety of recipes submitted by employees and friends of The Brewton Medical Center. The cost of each book is $10 with all proceeds going to Relay for Life.
Other activities planned at the park during the Bark for Life event will include an animal fashion show; best trick contest, musical sit and other contests for pets and their owners.
Peacock said awards will be presented to contest winners and their owners throughout the day. Registration fees for the event are $25 for one pet or $35 for two or more pets. Dogs must be on a leash no longer than six feet and under control at all times. All dogs attending the event must have proof of current rabies vaccination by providing a copy of the certificate or the pet must be wearing current identification and rabies tags.
In addition to the “Bark for Life” event, the Relay team from Comfort Care Hospice will be holding a Valentine’s Bake sale at their location on Douglas Avenue Feb. 11 and 12. The group will sell gourmet apples, cookies, chocolate pretzel rods, chocolate bark, fudge and marshmallow pops just in time for the sweetest holiday of the year.
