JDCC baseball falls

On Tuesday, the Jefferson Davis Community College Warhawk baseball team opened up their 2010 season with a home loss to LBW by a score of 11-8.
Things looked good for the Warhawks early in the game. In the first inning, a three-up-three-down inning was recorded for the Warhawks defensively and leadoff hitter Blake Long started the inning off with a leadoff double.
Back-to-back sacrifice flies advanced Long to third and was scored on Harry Haring’s sacrifice to put the Warhawks on top 1-0 after the first inning.
JDCC would be held to one run the next three innings while LBW scored three in the second, one in the third, one in the fourth, and three in the fifth inning to take an 8-1 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth inning.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Warhawks were able to get back into the game as Mikey McMillon, Robbie Jernigan, and Bill Hambrick all had singles to start the inning off to load the bases with no outs.
Long sacrificed to score McMillion to make the score 8-2, Taylor Register singled to score Jernigan to make the score 8-3 with one out with the bases still loaded.
That is when Reid Wynn connected for a grand slam over the leftfield fence to bring the Warhawks within one run at 8-7.
JDCC would go on to bat around in the inning but fail to score anymore runs in the inning.
With the lead at one for the Saints of LBW, they responded with one run each in the next three innings to hold an 11-7 lead heading into the bottom of the ninth inning.
In the bottom of the ninth inning, Register led off with a double and was singled in by Ryne Phillips to cut the lead to 11-8.
With runners at second and third and two outs, JDCC failed to plate any more runs as they dropped to 0-1 with the three-run loss.
Wynn led JDCC at the plate offensively as he went 1-for-4 with a grand slam and four RBIs.
Long was 1-for-4 with one RBI and a double and Register was 2-for-4 with one RBI, a single and a double.
Phillips was 1-for-3 with one RBI and Stephen Scoggins was 2-for-5 with two singles.
McMillion was 2-for-3 with a double. Jernigan and Haring had singles for JDCC in the loss.
Michael King got the start and the loss on the mound for the Warhawks. King went three innings and allowed four runs (none earned) on six hits, walked none and struck out two.
Shane Ikner went three innings after King and allowed five runs on six hits, one strikeout, walked one, and hit one.
Ryan Drummonds went the final three innings and allowed two runs on three hits, struck out one, hit one and walked none.
The Warhawks committed three errors in the loss and of the 11 runs for LBW, seven were earned runs.
JDCC was set to be back in action Friday when they traveled to Marion Military Institute for a 1 p.m. game.
The Warhawks will return to action today when they take on LBW again in Andalusia at 10 a.m. and Marion at 1 p.m.
The Warhawks will take on Pensacola Junior College at home Tuesday at 1 p.m.
