The Pensacola Pelicans announce recently that the contract of left-handed middle reliever Tyler Wilson was purchased by the Boston Red Sox.
Wilson resides in Andalusia and becomes the 25th Pelican player to sign with a Major League organization.
Wilson, son of former Brewton residents and current Andalusia residents David and Michelle Wilson, played a vital role in the Pensacola Pelicans reaching the championship series last season.
According to the Pelicans website, Wilson heads into spring training in March to compete for a spot on a Red Sox affiliated team.
He is the first Pelican to sign with a Major League Baseball organization in 2010.
The southpaw signed with the Pelicans after attending their try-out camp in June 2009.
The 6’0 – 180 reliever appeared in 23 games going 5-1 for the Pelicans during the 2009 season. Wilson’s numbers over his five-year career are good; compiling an 18-10-9 record with a 3.64 ERA, 225 strikeouts and only 99 walks in 187.2 innings pitched.
His average against is a meager .222 giving up just 76 earned runs.
Wilson began his professional career straight out of high school in 2005 with the Atlanta Braves organization.
The 21st round draft pick played Rookie ball in the Gulf Coast League where he went 2-0 in 11.1 innings with a 0.79 ERA and 11 punch outs. 
He moved up to single-A with the Rome Braves in 2007 playing in the South Atlantic League.
There he posted some of his best numbers appearing in 37 games going 6-4 with a 3.40 ERA in 50.1 innings.
He struck out a career high 70 batters while allowing 38 hits, 28 walks and saving five.
