For the seventh time since 2000, the T.R. Miller Lady Tiger basketball team will be making the trip to Birmingham for the Final Four.
The Lady Tigers earned their seventh trip with a 57-47 win over Abbeville Saturday in the finals of the Class 3A South Regional in Mobile.
The win sets up a rematch of the 2009 state championship game between the Lady Tigers of Brewton and Madison Academy for the right to advance to the 2010 state championship game.
The Lady Tigers (26-2) will take on Madison Academy (33-3) at 9 a.m. today at the BJCC in Birmingham.
As for Madison Academy, Jackson said the Mustangs have a good ball club.
Jackson said Madison Academy had one senior last year so they are basically the same team as last year.
Sophomore Lady Tiger point guard Leah Brundidge will be making another trip to Birmingham with the team.
Senior Keydra Shedrone said she wants another championship.
All three losses for Madison Academy come from losses to Class 6A programs in the Huntsville area.
The Lady Mustangs lost to Bob Jones (who will play for third straight state title this week) 46-40 in season opener and 39-37 in Huntsville Times Classic. The other loss came to Sparkman 53-50 late in the season. Sparkman lost to Bob Jones in Northwest regional final.
The Lady Mustangs return all three players who were all-tournament at the state tournament last year: sophomore point guard Lydia McGee, junior forward Nyla Johnson, and senior guard and forward Haley Stewart.
Also, junior Keke Fletcher has stepped up this season to give the Lady Tigers a strong inside presence.
Against 3A teams, the Lady Mustangs have been tested just once – in a 51-48 victory over Lauderdale County in the Northwest regional final.
They have won six straight and also have two 13-game winning streaks during the regular season.
