Different levels of abilities and interests of individuals is the primary reason a new variety of exercise classes are being offered at the Greater Brewton Area YMCA.
Fitness Director Vivian Layton said the new classes are just part of the YMCA’s efforts to offer a range of classes to fit the needs of area residents.
Although the YMCA current offers several classes each week, new classes will be an extension of services appealing to a wider range of members, Layton said.
New classes scheduled for a March start include a contemporary version of ballroom dancing, general body fitness and a class geared toward teens.
Modern Freestyle Ballroom Dancing classes will be held each Thursday beginning March 9 at 6:30p.m.
Bruce and Crystal Pope, who have taught similar classes in other communities, will be the instructors for the sessions. Class fees are $5 single and $10 couple or a full session of $45 and $90 respectively. Dates for the class are March 9, 16, 23, and May 4, 11, 18.
Emmie Jernigan, who serves as the fitness coordinator and health counselor at the YMCA, will begin a BodyFit class March 16. The classes will continue through May 18 and will include nutritional counseling, body-fat composition, health evaluations, weight-loss support and exercise.
Classes will meet each Tuesday from noon to 1 p.m. Cost for the entire class is $50 for YMCA members. Class size is limited to 12 participants.
For teens hoping to build body strength and speed, Coach Quenton Curry will be offering special training session for young men in seventh through 12th grade.
Curry, YMCA personal trainer, will integrate weight lifting, endurance and speed exercises into the class to help enhance athletic performance. Classes will begin Marcy 17 and continue through May 19 at 5:15 p.m. each Wednesday. The class will be limited to 12 athletes with a course fee of $50 for YMCA members.
Registration for all classes are currently open with additional information available at the Brewton Area YMCA facility located on Belleville Avenue or by calling 867-9622.
