A Brewton couple was arrested Friday on child abuse charges after a young victim told authorities she had been abused by them for four years.
The 11-year-old child told investigators she had been fondled by one of the suspects in the case since she was 7; she also told them she had suffered second- and third-degree burns after a pot of boiling water was thrown on her.
Investigator John Gleaton, director of the county’s domestic violence task force, said the abuse was initially reported to the Department of Human Resources and the Escambia County Regional Child Advocacy Center.
The child has been in protective custody since the investigation began, Gleaton said.
Robin Green, 51, and Calvin Green, 48, both of King Court in Brewton, were charged with willful abuse and sexual abuse of a child under the age of 12.
Both suspects remain in the Escambia County Detention Center, held on $100,000 bond each.
Gleaton said a case of child abuse often has many warnings signs that family members, teachers or other adults can pick up on. Signs of abuse can include sudden changes in behavior or school performance; has not received help for physical or medical problems brought to parents’ attention; is always watchful, as though preparing for something bad to happen; lacks adult supervision.
