Dozens of students lined the balcony areas of the Jefferson Davis Community College dorms Friday as law enforcement officials directed drug dogs in and out of rooms during a search at the Pea Ridge Road location.
Sgt. Bryan Davis with the Brewton Police Department’s Narcotics Division said the efforts included random searches at area schools and dorms Friday.
Davis said a pair of arrests at the Jefferson Davis Community College dorms on Pea Ridge Road last week is one reason efforts are being increased, Davis said.
Justin Burroughs, 20, of Whatley and Lacey Wiggins, 18, of Newville, were both arrested as a result of a search made at the dorm location.
At the time officers arrived there was no one inside the dorm room, however agents conducted a search of the room, Davis said.
Davis said agents found several items that indicated that Burroughs was in fact staying in the dorm room with Wiggins.
Wiggins was charged with first-degree possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. Both suspects were transported to the Escambia County Deten-tion Center.  The Brewton Police Department, Escambia County Sheriffs Department, 21st Judicial Drug Task Force and the Jefferson Davis Community College all worked together in connection with the search and arrests, Davis said.
Campus officials with Jefferson Davis Community College worked in cooperation with narcotics officers Friday morning at the dorms of the college on Pea Ridge Road.
JDCC President Dr. Susan McBride said she is glad to have the support of law enforcement agencies in the area.
Recently, a sheriff’s deputy has taken residence at the JDCC dorms and McBride says that should provide more security at the location.
Similar searches were also performed on campuses at Flomaton High School Friday, Davis said.
Dogs from Brewton Police Department, Elmore County Sheriff’s Office, Fountain Correctional Facility and Easterling Correctional Facility participated in the searches Friday.
