As W.S. Neal students began working last week on a future press box and concession stand at the high school’s baseball field, they were actually preserving the past.
The facility is the press box from the old football stadium.
The new press box and concession stand are just part of a series of improvements the booster club is working on for the baseball field.
Superintendent Billy Hines and the county school board approved getting the old press box moved to its new home. “That’s what really got the ball rolling,” Todd Williamson said.
Last week, his students got started on the repairs to the press box, tearing down interior walls and building studs that will support new paneling inside.
With the work under way on the concession stand, the Diamond Club is also working to raise money for other improvements.
Among the proposed changes: bricking the backstop; building an addition to the concession stand for bathrooms and dressing rooms; adding a bullpen to the visitors’ side; closing in the batting cage; and putting up new stands for both the home and visitors’ side.
Before the project is over, the baseball boosters could use even more of the old football stadium for the baseball field.
Diamond Club parent Steve Blackmon said the old bleachers from the home side of the stadium could be used at the baseball field.
