After seeing No. 5-ranked UMS-Wright defeat the Jackson Aggies, a team that pounded on W.S. Neal in recent area games, two of three times, it did not look good for the Eagle baseball team Thursday at home.
But, despite losing 7-4 Thursday to the Bulldogs to fall to 12-9 overall and to 2-3 in area play, W.S. Neal baseball coach Coy Campbell said he was pleased with his team’s play.
W.S. Neal committed three errors in the game and managed only four hits. While the errors were only three, it came at bad times, as UMS-Wright turned a 1-0 first inning lead into a 4-0 lead in the second inning on one Eagle three-base error that scored two runs.
W.S. Neal cut the lead to 4-2 with one run in the second and third innings, but UMS would plate one run in the fourth and fifth inning to take a 6-2 lead.
W.S. Neal cut the lead to 6-3 in the bottom of the fifth inning, but had their chances to get two more runs in the inning.
The Eagles had a runner picked off of second base and one thrown out at home, despite the catcher dropping the ball.
UMS extended their lead to 7-3 in the top of the sixth inning. W.S. Neal cut the lead to 7-4 with one run in the seventh inning, but would not get any closer losing by four.
W.S. Neal was set to take on UMS-Wright in a doubleheader Friday in Mobile.
At the plate for W.S. Neal, Hunter Mullins and Reid Johnson were both 1-for-4 with Johnson having a double.
Logan Williamson was 1-for-2 and Keith Bradley was 1-for-3.
Dylan Godwin took the loss on the mound for the Eagles of W.S. Neal as he went the complete game seven innings and allowed two earned run, two walks, three strikeouts, seven hits, and hit two batters.
