A greater number of properties were up for auction during Escambia County’s tax sale last year, and with little improvement in the economy, Tax Collector Joy Wiggins said this year could see a similar number of parcels on the auction block.
A list of property owners delinquent on their taxes is printed inside today’s edition of The Brewton Standard, a last opportunity for owners to pay up before property is auctioned May 13.
Wiggins said property owners have had several months to pay taxes since the original due date of Oct. 1.They are delinquent after Dec. 31. Property owners who are delinquent have until March 1 to pay those delinquent bills.
In addition to unpaid taxes, after Dec. 31 property owners can expect to pay additional fees and penalties, Wiggins said.
Wiggins said property owners who fail to pay taxes and fees due on property before May 13 will see their property go on the auction block.
Wiggins said property sold at the tax sale can still be redeemed by the property owner for up to three years after the sale.
Wiggins said a little planning by taxpayers could keep their property off the sale list come May.
With economic conditions being what they are, Wiggins said paying taxes when they are due is a smart move for property owners.
