The newly formed Civitan Club wanted to find a way to get involved in the community — and have found a way courtesy of Relay for Life.
Robin Allen, who serves as secretary-treasurer for the club, said the idea came at a recent board meeting of the group.
As part of the Relay for Life event, organizers have asked teams and community to contribute supplies needed at Hope Lodge in Birmingham.
Each Hope Lodge offers cancer patients and their families a free, temporary place to stay when effective treatment may be in another city. Not having to worry about where to stay or how to pay for lodging allows Hope Lodge guests to focus on getting well.
Civitan members will be stationed at a collection point located at the Brewton Church Of Christ’s parking lot on Douglas Avenue. Donations of supplies may be made each day through Friday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Allen said.
Supplies needed for Hope Lodge include household, pantry and linen items. Donations of the following items are needed: paper towels; toilet paper; laundry detergent; fabric sheets; dishwasher detergent; 60 watt light bulbs; disposable latex gloves; Clorox disinfectant wipes; other cleaning supplies; coffee creamers-dry; Ziploc bags; aluminum foil; Glad-to-Go plastic containers with lids; white pillow cases; white bath cloths; and white bath towels.
