Anyone whose life or family has been touched by cancer — and we think we can accurately guess that is just about everyone in our community — is invited to the grounds of the YMCA this Saturday to celebrate, remember and fight back.
Relay for Life is an annual event at which area teams celebrate the lives that have been saved by cancer research, remember those who have been lost and fight back with funds and support for the American Cancer Society.
But while Saturday is set aside for the Relay, area teams have been working for months to reach their fund-raising goals. Among their activities just in the past few weeks have been raffles, bingo, a dinner with celebrity waiters and a cake contest. Two teams have even placed colorful toilets in area yards in exchange for fund-raising dollars.
Relay has always been the kind of activity that attracts support from our community, whether that’s folks who join a team, participate in a fundraiser or spend time at the Relay event itself.
We hope this year will be no different. Activities kick off at noon with a survivors lap, and events continue throughout the day and evening, winding up at 9 p.m.
Cancer never sleeps. It affects all of us. This Saturday is one way that we can help fight back and make sure that all of those affected by this disease will be with us for a long, long time.
