If the old adage is true that good pitching beats good hitting, Trippe Floyd and Jared Cooper proved it Thursday night during Little League baseball play at the YMCA Sports Park. Each led his respective team – Floyd the Rockies and Cooper the Brewers – to victory with dominating performances.

In doing so, the Rockies (6-2) remained one game behind the Brewers (7-1) in the 11-12-year-old Division.

Floyd threw a complete-game one-hitter as the Rockies defeated the Tigers 12-2 while Cooper struck out nine of the 12 he faced and watched as Christian Alvarez came on to complete the combined no-hitter as the Brewers beat the Rangers 8-1.

In a 9-10 division game, the Marlins upset the Astros 14-10, but no game information was provided at press time.

ROCKIES 12, TIGERS 2

While his teammates were pounding out eight hits in the four-inning game, Rockies ace Trippe Floyd was recording six strikeouts in the 12 outs he needed to gain the win. Duncan Brittain tagged Floyd for the only hit he yielded, that with one out in the final inning.

Jake Najor led the winning offense with a 2-for-2 effort at the plate, and scored three times. Floyd also contributed a pair of hits – with two RBIs – and scored three times.

Kellyn Winn (double, 2 runs scored, 2 RBIs), Hunter Brittain, Christopher Gehman and River Johnson all had hits as well. Along with Duncan Brittain’s lone hit for the Tigers, Will Smith and Jonathan Lucas scored.

BREWERS 8, RANGERS 1

In three innings of work, Jared Cooper struck out nine and walked three as he and Christian Alvarez combined for a 5-inning no-hitter. Cooper, who has averaged 10 strikeouts in his four pitching outings, improved his record to 3-0. Alvarez struck out four to close it out.

Cooper also dealt a big blow at the plate in the third inning. The Brewers led by only 2-0 when he drilled a line-drive down the first-base line that ended up being a 3-run, inside-the-park home run. The Brewers added a run in the fourth and two more in the fifth to hold the Rangers at bay.

Hot-hitting Ethan Tyree once again led the Brewers, this time with a 3-for-3 effort that included an RBI and two runs scored, while Brooks Brown added two hits, two runs scored and an RBI.

Tyler Hoomes and Alvarez got the other Brewer hits on the night.

BREWTON RANGERS 15, EB YANKEES 4

While his teammates were staking him to a 7-0 early lead, Ranger pitcher Drew Williamson was holding the Yankees at bay from the mound.

Williamson scattered five hits over four and two-thirds innings, struck out seven and walked just one. Lane Clark came in to get the final out on a strikeout.

Williamson also helped his own cause at the plate, drilling a bases-loaded triple into the left-field corner. Clark and Garrett Salter each had singles as well as the Rangers benefited from 19 walks.

BREWTON ROCKIES 13, FLOMATON RED SOX 6

The Rockies  utilized three pitchers – starter Chris Gehman, Alex Daughtery and Hunter Brittain – to get the win. The trio combined for six strikeouts and benefited from six big hits as well.

Once again, Trippe Floyd led the way with two hits in three at-bats and two runs scored. Gehman doubled and scored twice, as did Kellyn Winn. Daughtery slapped a three-run triple and Jared Baker added three RBIs with a hit and also scored a run.

BREWTON BREWERS 14, EB CARDINALS 6

After a slow start, the Brewers overcame a 6-5 deficit to rally and record the win. Starting pitcher Joshua Winton – who benefited from a nine-run fifth inning – fired a five-hitter and struck out seven in the winning effort.

The Brewer offense sent 13 batters to the plate without an out being recorded in their fifth-inning rally. Ethan Tyree led the Brewers with three hits, including a double, two RBIs and scored three times.

Jared Cooper added a pair of hits, including a long two-run home run, and scored three times as well. Brooks Brown scored three times, while Caleb Winton added an RBI single.

The Cardinals were paced by TyShaun Davis and Derrick  Barton, each of whom had a double, triple and scored twice. Logan Morrill added a single.

MARLINS 14, ASTROS 10

In a game played last Thursday, the Marlins used a 10-hit attack to run out to a big lead and was able to hold on late to get the win over the Astros.

While Andrew Etheridge was leading the way once again with three hits for the Marlins, he also got the win on the mound.

He got plenty of support from his teammates as Demonte Jenkins slapped an inside-the-park home run and a triple.

Gibb Roberts and Hunter Johnson added two hits apiece and Todd Watson also singled.

For the Astros- who made it interesting late by closing a 14-4 deficit to 14-10 – Joseph Nance led the way with a pair of triples, while Terrence Hall added a triple, and T. Johnson a pair of singles.
