The Brewton Standard will receive several awards for editorial and advertising work at an Alabama Press Association awards banquet this weekend.

The newspaper was named among the best small weeklies in the state, placing third in General Excellence category for the APA’s annual Better Newspapers Contest.

The Brewton Standard also won first place in community service for its project last year to encourage residents to shop locally. The effort was inspired in large part by local pharmacist Danny Cottrell’s $2 “one-man stimulus plan.”

“We are proud of all of the awards our staff received, but we always enjoy being recognized for the work we do to help the community,” publisher Kerry Whipple Bean said. “Our first priority is serving our readers and our customers.”

The newspaper also received these awards:

• Advertising campaign, first place

• Advertising signature page, third place

• Sports page, third place
