The sweat and generosity of a couple of groups of people are making a difference at the Girl Scout Hut on St. Nicholas Avenue this week.

A dinner and auction held by the Brewton Civic League recently raised needed funds for the renovation of the Girl Scout meeting hut. The funds raised by the group are being put to use by members of the First Baptist Church of Brewton’s work crew.

Jimmy Adkisson, a member of the FBC crew, said the men involved were happy to be working on the project.

“I was auctioneer for the event by the Civic League,” Adkisson said. “Afterwards they said they needed someone to do the work at the Hut. I talked with the work crew and we decided we would help.”

The help being done by the crew is going to make a big difference on the appearance and comfort of the building, Adkisson said.

“Our project is to put new siding on the building,” Adkisson said. “We are replacing the siding with new pine siding that will be stained. We are also putting in new lighting inside and out.”

The project also includes installing a new sink and cabinet inside the building, Adkisson said.

“When we get finished this will be a nice, comfortable place for the Girl Scouts to meet,” Adkisson said. “The Hut will be better and will be a nice place for them to meet in summer and winter.”

Adkisson said several men had stepped up to work on the project. On hand for the first day of work were Adkisson, George Grover, Larry Covan, Dale Blair, Billy Murphy, Tom Frazier, Don O’Bannon, Frank Stoshak, Wilburn Perry and Will Rogers.

“We are happy to do this,” Adkisson said. “When we get through the Hut will be nearly as good as what the Boy Scouts have.”

The building, located on St. Nicholas Avenue, is owned by the City of Brewton, Adkisson said.

“The City owns the building and they are helping with the supplies for this renovation,” Adkisson said. “We are doing the labor, but the City is paying for the materials for some of the work being done here.”

Adkisson said he hopes the crew and continue their work on a schedule that would have them complete the project by the end of the week.

“We are getting organized and moving along,” Adkisson said. “If we can keep on track we hope to be finished by the end of the week.”
