Escambia County Sheriff’s officers are continuing to investigate reports of suspicious individuals in the McCall area last week.

Escambia County Chief Deputy Mike Lambert said an incident involving a red vehicle occupied by two males occurred last week in the McCall community.

“We had a report that five children had seen a red car with two males in the vehicle motion to them to approach the vehicle,” Lambert said. “The children knew what to do and ran from the scene and reported the incident to an adult.”

Lambert said an officer was in the area and responded immediately to the June 1 incident.

“Our officer was in the area and quickly responded to the call,” Lambert said. ‘He canvassed the area and put out a ‘be on the look-out’ to other officers in the area.”

Lambert said an officer with the Alabama Highway Patrol division was in the area and also responded.

“Our officer continued to investigate the case,” Lambert said. “Although the State Trooper stopped a vehicle, the children said it was not the car they had seen earlier. We have no other leads in this case.”

Lambert said a second call was received at the Sheriff’s Department this week that a similar incident had occurred on Lister Loop in the McCall area.

“Of course when the safety of anyone, especially a child, is at stake we respond as quickly as possible,” Lambert said. “After investigating the second incident no evidence was found to substantiate the claim.”

Lambert said the incidents are a good reason to make the communities in the county more aware of surroundings.

“We hope that this incident will make parents aware of the dangers out there,” Lambert said. “Now would be a great time to discuss hot to be careful and the dangers of speaking to strangers. With children outside enjoying the warm weather now it is very important that we do everything we can to safeguard them and educate them on being safe.”

Lambert said the incident will continue to be investigated.

“We are on top of this. We will continue to monitor the situation and follow any leads we get in cases like this,” Lambert said. “If anyone in the county sees anything suspicious we will certainly respond.”
