Brewton 11-12s beat Opp 5-4 Tuesday, force extra game

With their backs against the wall Tuesday night and needing to defeat Opp twice to win the district championship, Brewton forced a deciding game with a 5-4 win over Opp.

The deciding game will be played Wednesday at 7 p.m. in Opp.

With the game tied 4-4 heading into the bottom of the sixth Jonathon Lucas led the inning off with a single and advanced to second on a passed ball.

Opp struck out the next two Brewton batter to set up the winning run on second with two outs.

With that scenario, Timothy McDonald drove in Lucas from second to give Brewton the 5-4, one run win, and extend Brewton’s life in the tournament with the deciding game Wednesday.

Brewton trailed two after the top of the second inning after Opp scored one run each in the first and second innings.

In the bottom of the second inning, Jared Cooper got Brewton back in the game with a solo homerun and Brewton later tied the game on a passed ball and a Trippe Floyd single gave them a 3-2 lead after the second inning of play. The game would stay that way until the top of the fifth inning when Opp plated two runs to claim a 4-3 lead but Brewton tied the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the inning on a passed ball.

In the sixth inning, Opp left a runner on second base to keep the game tied at 4-4 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning.

In the bottom of the sixth, with two outs, McDonald drove in the winning run as Brewton claimed the win.

Floyd got the start on the mound and the no decision as he went 5 1/3 innings.

Brooks Brown went the final 2/3 of an inning and recorded one strikeout and the win.

For Brewton batting, Floyd was 1-for-4 with on RBI and McDonald was 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI.

Cooper was 1-for-2 with a homerun and an RBI and Kellyn Winn was 1-for-2 with a double. Lucas was 1-for-2 in the win for Brewton.
