Brewton Advanced Babe Ruth falls at state tournament

The Brewton Advanced Babe Ruth team recently went 1-2 in their 16-18-year-old state tournament in Tallassee.

In game one against Mobile, Brewton claimed an 8-4 win before falling in game two 10-3 against Sylacauga and 6-3 in game three against Covington County.

Making the team for Brewton was Jacob Cannon, Monterrius Culliver, Conner Denton, Curtis Glaize, Caleb McAnally, Shawn Odom, Wes Dickey, William Shell, Stephen Warren, Logan Williamson, and Keith Bradley.

Coaches were Randy Denton and Joey Shell.

Brewton 8, Mobile 4

Against Mobile in game one, Brewton trailed 5-4 heading into the top of the seventh inning before scoring four runs in the inning to win 8-4.

Brewton led 3-2 after the first inning and 4-2 after the second inning only to see Mobile take a 5-4 lead after scoring three runs in the fifth inning.

Brewton’s four-run seventh helped aid them in the four-run win.

Shell earned the win on the mound as he went the complete distance allowing eight hits, five runs, three walks, and struck out eight.

Denton was 1-for-3 along with Shell and Cannon was 1-for-2. McAnally was 2-for-3 with a double and Glaize was 1-for-1 with Odom who had a double.

Bradley was 2-for-3 and Culliver was 1-for-4.

Sylacauga 10, Brewton 3

In Brewton’s second game of the tournament, they dropped into the losers bracket against Sylacauga with a 10-3 loss.

At the end of the first inning, Sylacauga led Brewton 2-1 and then lead 3-2 after the second inning.

Brewton tied the game at 3-3 with one run in the fourth inning but would be held scoreless the remainder of the game while Sylacauga added two in the fifth and five in the sixth to get the seven-run win.

Bradley, Warren, and Denton all pitched in the loss with Bradley being the pitcher of record.

Bradley went five innings and allowed 10 hits, five runs, and struck out one.

Warren went 2/3 innings and allowed two hits, and four runs and Denton went the final 1/3 of an inning and struck out one.

Denton was 1-for-3 and Shell was 1-for-4 with a homerun.

McAnally was 1-for-3 and Williamson was also 1-for-3.

Bradley was 1-for-2 along with Warren and Culliver was 1-for-3.

Covington County 6, Brewton 3

Facing elimination, Brewton lost 6-3 to end their run in the tournament.

Neither team scored until the top of the fifth inning after Brewton led 2-1 at the end of the inning.

Covington County scored three in the sixth inning to take a 4-2 lead after the sixth inning.

Covington County then plated two in the top of the seventh inning and Brewton scored one to lose by three.

Denton took the loss on the mound as he went the complete game and allowed seven hits, six runs, walked one, and struck out five.

Batting for Brewton, Denton was 2-for-4 and Shell was 1-for-3 along with Cannon, Bradley, Warren, and Culliver.
