In the 2010 season opener for the W.S. Neal Eagle football team Thursday night on the road in Flomaton, the Eagles were shutout 35-0.

Dating back to last year, the shutout was the fifth for the Eagles in 11 games.

“Flomaton was better prepared, the more better coached team, the more physical team tonight and it showed,” W.S. Neal head coach Kevin Jordan said. “I thought we moved the ball well at times, but when you have almost five turnovers, it seemed like when we got something going we would either have a negative play or we would turn the ball over.”

Flomaton led 14-0 after the first quarter and 20-0 at halftime before scoring a touchdown and two-point conversion in the third quarter to hold a 28-0 lead.

The Hurricanes added one final touchdown in the fourth to get the big win.

Flomaton racked up 325 total yards of offense with 277 coming on the ground and 48 in the air. All the Hurricanes yards in the second half were on the ground with 163.

W.S. Neal had 114 yards of total offense with 40 on the ground and 64 in the air.

One other thing Jordan noticed was his team’s play on defense.

“Defensively, our tackling was terrible,” Jordan said. “We were just absolutely terrible, so Flomaton deserved to win the game. They were better prepared and the better football team.”

In the game Friday night, it looked like the opening kickoff would be the omen set in the game as the Hurricanes ran the kickoff back 88 yards for a touchdown. The touchdown would later be called back after a penalty in the run and the Hurricanes set up at the W.S. Neal 38-yard line.

The Hurricanes needed only three plays as quarterback Ryheem Dixon broke five tackles for a 30-yard touchdown at the 9:50 mark to give the Hurricanes a 7-0 lead after Corey Busbee’s extra point.

Both team alternated fumbles on their next series and after an Eagle interception, the Hurricanes needed only six plays for their second touchdown of the night to take a 14-0 lead with 1:27 left in the quarter.

W.S. Neal was forced to punt on their ensuing drive and Flomaton scored four plays later to take a 20-0 lead with 8:41 left in the half.

Another Eagle interception gave the ball to the Hurricanes and neither team scored before halftime as W.S. Neal trailed 20-0 at the half.

In the second half, W.S. Neal turned the ball over on downs on their first possession and Flomaton scored five plays later to take a 28-0 lead with 7:04 left in the quarter.

For the Eagles next series, W.S. Neal put together an 11-play drive to the Hurricane 15-yard before turning the ball over on downs.

Both teams would alternate possessions before the Hurricanes added their final touchdown of the night at the 6:58 mark to win 35-0.

Dixon led Flomaton with 82 yards on 11 carries and one touchdown and Robinson had three rushing touchdowns and one passing.

For the Eagles, LaTrae Williams led with 27 yards on six carries rushing and Ashton Elliott led receiving with three catches for 26 yards.

Dylan Godwin was 8-of-25 with two interceptions for 64 yards.

Next week Jordan said things do not get any easier with preseason No. 1 and first region opponent UMS-Wright coming into town.

“All you can do is go back and watch the film and look and see where you have got to get better at,” Jordan said. “We have to go from there. That is all you can do.”

With the loss, the Eagles fall to 0-1 to start the season. The team will open region play next week at home against UMS-Wright.
