Law enforcement officials captured a suspect Wednesday afternoon after a day-long manhunt that forced lockdowns on two school campuses.

Benjamin Jackson was taken into custody near New Beginnings Drive off Pea Ridge Road just after the noon hour today.

Officials say the suspect was being treated for cuts, scrapes and possibly a broken rib after spending the night in the wooded area around the Pea Ridge area.

No information on charges being filed against the suspect have been made available. Jackson will be taken to the Escambia County Detention Center when released from D.W. McMillan Hospital.

Police Chief Monte McGougin said Jackson ran his car into a house on Williams Lane Tuesday night. He fled on foot from that scene and police searched for him until about midnight.

He was spotted around 8 a.m. in the Pea Ridge Road area. Dogs from Fountain Prison aided police in the search.

The Jefferson Davis Community College campus in Brewton put a lockdown in place Wednesday morning because of the search, alerting students and staff through text messages and on the college Facebook page.

“Please resume normal activity, but be aware of your personal safety when on or near the Brewton Campus,” the college’s Facebook page states.

Escambia Brewton Career Technical Center students were released from the facility at 10:30 a.m., according to Principal David Lanier. Students who attend classes at the Center for afternoon classes will not attend, he said.

“Safety of our students is our number one priority,” Lanier said.
