Sheriff’s officers in Florida are searching for a carjacking suspect after a Brewton woman said she was briefly kidnapped while shopping in Pensacola.
Angela M. Dowdy, 29, of Brewton, told officers she had been shopping at Cordova Mall in Pensacola Thursday evening when she stopped at a closed convenience store, possibly on North Palafox. She told officers she was approached by an unknown, young black man wearing a white polo shirt with red stripes. He asked her for a ride up the street and she complied, but then he asked her to stop in front of a house. She was unfamiliar with the location.
Dowdy told police she was ordered to get out of the vehicle and get in the trunk. She refused, but the suspect hit her with a gun and pointed the gun at her, she told police. He took $200 from her and shut the trunk with her in it, she said.
After the suspect drove around for about two minutes, he slowed, and Dowdy said she took the opportunity to pull the internal truck release and jump from the vehicle.
Dowdy suffered cuts and scrapes on her face, head, arms, back, hands, shoulders and legs, deputies said.
Not long after EMS responded to help Dowdy with her injures, deputies began investigating a crash scene, where Dowdy’s Ford Taurus struck another vehicle and a house on Hernandez Street in Pensacola. Witnesses said they saw the black male in the polo shirt fleeing from the vehicle.
Anyone with information about the crime should call the sheriff’s department at 850-436-9630.
