Event to raise funds for Brewton room

Fifty families from Brewton alone have used the Ronald McDonald House as a home base while their children were being treated at nearby hospitals in Mobile.

Now a group of Brewton residents wants to give back to the facility by sponsoring a “Brewton room” at the home.

The McCheers event, scheduled for Nov. 4, will offer an evening of food and cocktails as well as silent and live auctions, all to benefit Ronald McDonald House, known as “the house that love built.”

Ronald McDonald House provides rooms for a minimal cost to families whose children are being treated at a hospital. The Mobile Ronald McDonald House is expanding from 12 to 38 rooms.

“(Ronald McDonald House) has met needs in a very caring way for people in our community,” said McCheers committee member Marcia DeGraaf. “At a time when people have emotional, financial and medical needs for their children, it’s a home away from home.”

Because the house has limited space right now, some families are turned away, although they usually are given vouchers for local hotels. But the homelike atmosphere at Ronald McDonald House helps families, said Margaret Ann Smith, whose brother, Thad Moore, and his family used Ronald McDonald House six years ago.

The local committee must raise $25,000 for the Brewton room at the Ronald McDonald House.

The McCheers event, which will be held from 6 to 10 p.m. Nov. 4 at the Country Club of Brewton, will include silent auctions of about 15 or more themed packages — such as a Gulf Coast getaway or bridge bash — and there will also be a live auction for one to two big-ticket items.

Ronald McDonald himself will be on hand for the live auction.

The event will also feature live music and food from caterer Clifton Morrisette.

DeGraaf and Smith said attendees are encouraged to “come as you are” to the event.

Tickets for the event are $50 per person. Anyone interested in McCheers can call 251-694-6874 or 867-5767.

Sponsors for the event are also needed. Sponsorship levels will include tickets to the event and a pre-party reception.
