Candidates vying for a variety of local and state offices have been invited to speak during an event hosted by the Greater Brewton Area Chamber of Commerce’s Governmental Affairs Committee and the Brewton Young Professionals organization.

The event will be held Oct. 14 from 9 a.m. to noon at the ATN building located on the campus of Jefferson Davis Community College.

Judy Crane, executive director of the COC, said the event will allow candidates to explain their position on a number of issues facing public officials.

“We have invited local, state and national candidates to this forum,” Crane said. “We have had some candidates to confirm their attendance and expect others to join before the event.”

The event will begin with a meet and greet session at 9 a.m. Crane said a forum-style discussion will follow introductions of candidates.

“We will allow each candidate an opportunity to introduce themselves to let voters know their political positions,” Crane said. “Following introductions a moderator will address candidates with questions from those attending.”

Jason Daniel, president of the BYP organization and a member of the Chamber board, will serve as moderator for the event, Crane said.

Crane said those who attend the forum will be allowed to submit written questions to be presented during the question/answer period of the event.

“Our moderator will ask candidates specific questions that have been submitted,” Crane said. “Each candidate will have a chance to respond to the questions presented.”

Crane said candidates for the office of Escambia County Sheriff have already confirmed their attendance at the event.

“Grover Smith and Heath Jackson have already agreed to participate in the forum,” Crane said. “We hope to hear from more of the candidates as time for the event gets closer. We hope to have several candidates available at the forum.”
