Canvas, oils and fun will be the focus of an event planned to raise funds to benefit the American Cancer Society Monday night.

Sharon Peacock, an organizer of the Painting Party event, said proceeds from the evening will benefit the Pink Pirates team’s efforts to raise funds to help in the fight against cancer.

“This has been an idea I’ve had in the back of my mind for sometime,” Peacock said. “I had gone to a similar event in Tuscaloosa and had a great time. It’s a great opportunity for folks who would like to paint but have never done it.”

Peacock said the event will be a lesson in painting as well as a social event.

“We have Dr. Lyn Gill from Jefferson Davis Community College who will be teaching the first lesson,” Peacock said. “Painters are invited to bring their favorite beverage to enjoy during the evening and learn how to paint on canvas. And, every dollar will benefit the American Cancer Society.”

Peacock said the event will be open to the first 25 to 30 who respond by making a reservation or walking in at the event.

“We will certainly take reservations for the evening,” Peacock said. “Anyone who doesn’t make a reservation can come to the event and get a seat if space permits.”

The event is set for Monday evening beginning at 7 p.m. at L House Printing/Clayton Lisenby Photography’s location on the Boardwalk in downtown Brewton.

“We are going to be in a great location for this event,” Peacock said. “Clayton Lisenby has graciously allowed us to set up in his location. His offices are located above the old Book and Bean location on the Boardwalk. We are excited about this opportunity and are hoping for a great turnout.”

Peacock said all materials for the painting project will be provided including canvas and paints in exchange for a $30 donation.

“We want people to be able to enjoy the evening and produce a work of art in the process,” Peacock said. “We hope to make this event a regular fundraiser for the American Cancer Society.”

Peacock said proceeds from the first session will benefit the Making Strides program of ACS with future events benefiting Relay for Life activities for ACS.

“With Relay for Life fundraising is going on almost year ‘round,” Peacock said. “This painting party will be the first of what we hope is many painting parties. We hope to work out a calendar with other artists in the area to offer different aspects of painting for those who would like to learn more about the art.”
