Cars of all sorts will be on display in downtown Brewton when the sixth Annual Lions Club Car Show starts at 8 a.m. on Saturday.

The cars will be displayed in the parking lot behind the court house and on Henderson Street beside the city park.

This event, which is presented by the Brewton Lions Club, all began in 2005, when a couple of car lovers thought of an idea to showplace some of their favorite cars.

Sam Archer of Cantonment and Glen Freeman of Brewton tossed around the idea of a car show and finally came up the first show which took place in downtown Brewton. That was the beginning of an annual show that includes many local owners and those who drive in.

“Sam and I love to go to car shows and we thought it would be a good idea to try to organize one here in Brewton,” Freeman said. “After the show, we thought about some charity that we could get to be involved in an annual car show. The way it all happened is a little story of its own. My wife, Ann, and I share a dog with Patti Mitchell, who lives down the street from us and that is how it all began.”

Freeman said Mitchell was still working at the time and every morning she would leave for work with the little dog Tipper following along behind. Tipper always got tired and quit the chase right along where the Freemans live.

“She began to make it a habit to spend the day here at our house and Patti would pick her up on the way home from work,” Freeman said. “In other words, we shared custody of Tipper. Patti is now retired and Tipper doesn’t come as early as she used to, but she still comes down later in the day and if Patti is busy, Ann and I babysit the dog.

“After the first car show in 2005, Sam and I thought it would be good to let some charity take over,” Freeman said. “Because I knew Patti and she is a Lions Club member, we asked the club if they wanted to take it on. They did, and the rest, as they say, is history.”

Registration for car owners will be followed by a flag ceremony at 9 a.m. by the local Boy Scouts.

Registration is $25 and includes a lunch of hamburgers and sausage dogs with the trimmings.

This year’s event will award trophies at 2:30 p.m. for the top 40 cars entered and 12 trophies for the “Best of” engine, paint job, interior, Ford, General Motors, Mopar, modified, show, judge’s choice, Lions Club choice, competition, and one for the biggest car nut.

“Most everybody likes to come to Brewton to our car show,” Freeman said. “They like it because it is laid back and they can sit back and enjoy the day. The weather is supposed to be good on Saturday so we are looking for a good show. I do know that there are other shows in the area, but people like to come here, so we are hoping for a good turnout.”

The Lions Club will be selling tickets and at the end of the day, there will be a 50/50 cut of the sales between the Lions Club and the winning ticket. Door prizes will be given and all proceeds will go to Lions Club charities.
