Escambia County and Brewton City schools will join other systems across the state to invite parents to join with teachers to strengthen the bond between school and home.

Statewide Parent Visitation Month is held to raise awareness of the importance of parental involvement and the role that parents play in their child’s education.

The Escambia County School System will celebrate Parent Visitation Day on Monday, Oct. 18. This year’s theme will be “Families + Schools: It All Adds Up.”

“While the day is referred to as Parenting Day, we hope to pull together anyone responsible for raising school-age children in Escambia County’s public schools,” said Magaline Marshall, parental involvement coordinator for the county school system.

Students from the Brewton City School System will also participate in Parenting Day, although students will not be in school that day.

All three schools in the city system will be open from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. for parents to stop by and conference with the teachers about their children.

Brewton Elementary School will also begin its Book Fair at 10 a.m. on Monday and concluding on Oct. 25. The Book Fair will be open until 7 p.m.

Special activities are being planned at each school on Monday to provide information about the programs and events at each county school.

• Pollard-McCall Junior High School will have the Title I Parent Center and the computer lab open from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m.; the Title I meeting will be from 9 to 9:30 a.m.; Jennifer Hall will present state assessment data workshop from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.; Rebekah Fore, the school nurse, will be available answer questions from 1:30 to 3 p.m.; Stephanie Jackson, director of Child Advocacy will be available to talk with parents about child abuse and related issues from 3 to 4:30 p.m. and the parent-teacher conferences will be from 3 to 6 p.m.

• W.S. Neal Elementary School will have a review and explanation of the standards-based kindergarten report card from 8 to 9:15 a.m.; the Parent Resource Center will have a ‘Make-N-Take’ from 9:30 to 11 a.m. to offer parents the chance to make a variety of skills to assist children at home; a review of the Continuous Improvement Plan will be presented by the principal and assistant principal from 11:15 a.m. to 12 p.m. The school will have open house for the parents to tour the school from 1 to 2 p.m. and from 2 to 3 p.m. activities will be planned for parental involvement. Parent-teacher conferences will be from 3 to 6 p.m.

• Escambia-Brewton Career Technical Center will have an open house for parents to tour with students as guides. Local businesses and industries will be invited to attend; brochures will be available for parents; refreshments will be served (hot dog, chips and drinks); and there will be a drawing for a ‘Visa or Mastercard’ for parents and students whose parents attend.

• W.S. Neal Middle School will have an assessment program from 10 to 11 a.m.; Drug Abuse Resistance Education with Larry Smith, the Resource Officer from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.; A+ Overview by Becky Daughtry from 1 to 2 p.m. and parent-teacher conferences from 3 to 6 p.m.

• W.S. Neal High School will have the Parenting Center open all day for parents to visit. There will be a Medieval Presentation for parents of students in the British Lit Class from 8 to 10 a.m. A Reward Day for Students will be held for those who have no discipline report and 70 and above average and will be treated to a pizza party at 11 a.m.

Parents and guardians, who have signed up,(no other friends or relatives) are invited to join their student in the gym during their lunch period from 11:45 a.m. to 12:37 p.m.

The parent-teacher conferences will be held from 3 to 6 p.m.
