In their final region game of the year, the W.S. Neal Eagles will travel to Mobile for a Thursday night game against the Saraland Spartans.

Saraland enters the game with a 2-6 overall record and a 2-4 region record while W.S. Neal will be seeking their first win this season and region win since going winless in the region in 2008 and 2009.

Saraland will be entering the game coming off a 30-27 win over B.C. Rain last week while W.S. Neal comes into Thursday’s game after a 56-7 loss to No. 2 Thomasville.

“Well, Thomasville is obviously a very good football team and we knew that coming in,” Eagle head coach Kevin Jordan said. “They were big, fast, and physical. I thought we continued to play hard the entire game but we were overmatched a little bit.”

Jordan said mistakes in the kicking game early hurt in the loss.

“In the first half, we had two punts blocked for touchdowns and that put us in a hole early that we could not dig ourselves out of,” Jordan said. “They are good. One of the best teams we have played so it was a tough one.”

As for Saraland Thursday night, the Spartans are in their first year of playing AHSAA football.

“It will be something new for us,” Jordan said. “We have never seen them before, but we have seen them on film. Even though it was their first year of playing football, they are not a young team. They have 29 juniors and that is a good bit more than we have so they have a good bit of players that have played football before. So, it will be a challenge for us. The game will be played at Lipscomb Field and it is a nice place to play. We are really excited about going down there and playing.”

Jordan said the Spartans have played really well at times.

“They have played some good teams really close in some football games,” Jordan said. “I think they played UMS to a 0-0 first quarter. They do a pretty good job with what they have and it will be a good challenge for us. Their quarterback, No. 2, William Robison, is a good player for them. He has a quick release and will they will run some multiple fronts on defense. It will be a challenge for us.”

The game will be the third Thursday game for W.S. Neal this season as they played Opp in a preseason game and traveled to Flomaton for a Thursday night game in week one.

“Luckily for us, this will be our third game on Thursday so it won’t be anything new for us, but it will be a short week,” Jordan said. “We will have to try and get in as much as we can on the days we have, but it is not anything new. We have done this twice before already. That won’t be that big of an issue I think, but we are still looking for our first win and region win and a win will be big for us. Confidence-wise it will help going into our last game. I would I expect us to play really hard and let the chips fall where they may.”

Game time is set for 7 p.m.
