Escambia County officials are hoping someone will help tell them what happened early Saturday morning when someone apparently crashed into one of the columns outside the county-owned Caffey-Presto building.

The brick structure, one of the main, lantern-topped columns, was demolished.

Officials believe the damage happened sometime between 5:30 and 7:45 a.m. Saturday, said County Administrator Tony Sanks.

“The police noticed it,” he said. “It was leaning hard when they saw it.”

There was no debris from a vehicle nearby, Sanks said.

County commission Chairman David Stokes said he hopes anyone with any knowledge of the damage will contact county officials.

“We’ll keep their identity confidential,” Stokes said. “We just need to know who did it, otherwise (the county) has to pay for it.”

The county bought the building about six years ago, Sanks said.

Anyone with information is asked to call the county comission office at 867-0208.
