In celebration of the Thanksgiving season churches in East Brewton will be joining in a special community service Sunday evening.

Congregations of eight local churches as well as residents throughout the East Brewton and Brewton area will gather at First Baptist Church of East Brewton beginning at 6 p.m. for special holiday service.

The highlight of the evening will be musical selections presented by the community choir made up of singers from the participating churches.

Cindy Simmons, a member of the staff at First Baptist Church of East Brewton, said this planned service has become a tradition for the city.

“It’s just good to get all of these churches involved, and not just by denomination,” Simmons said. “The community service has become a tradition in East Brewton. The services have been held each year for three years. This year’s service will be a night when the citizens come together to celebrate the upcoming season of Thanksgiving and Christmas.”

Following the services a reception will be held at the East Brewton Civic Center. Members of churches throughout the city have been preparing a variety of finger foods and drinks to be offered to those who attend.

As has been the tradition in recent years, a special “Lighting of the Tree” ceremony will be held following the reception.

East Brewton Mayor Terry Clark will exit the Civic Center and be responsible for lighting the tree located at Ft. Crawford Park, adjacent to the Civic Center grounds.

“I don’t know all the details of the event, but I do know that I am going to be there to throw the switch,” said Clark. “It should be a very good night that will allow all of the citizens of East Brewton to fellowship with each other.”

Participating churches for the 2010 event include First Baptist Church of East Brewton, First United Methodist Church of East Brewton, Cedar Hill United Methodist Church, Cedar Hill Baptist Church, Crossroads Community Church, May Creek United Methodist Church, East Brewton Church of God and First Church of the Nazarene.

Organizers are requesting those who attend the services bring a package of diapers as a contribution to be delivered to the Save-A-Life Foundation of Escambia County.
