TRM girls start season Monday

After three straight years of reaching the Final Four and winning one state championship, the 2010-2011 Lady Tigers of T.R. Miller hope to make it a fourth straight year.

To do so, the Lady Tigers will have to accomplish the feat with reduced numbers. This years roster for T.R. Miller only shows 10 players with five being seniors, two juniors, one sophomore, and two freshmen.

“We are going to be pretty small this year and a pretty quick team,” T.R. Miller Lady Tiger head coach Ron Jackson said. “We don’t have as many numbers as we have had in the past as we only have 10 players.

“They all can probably contribute some but the main thing is we have been working pretty hard and they seem to be pretty enthusiastic about the team this year. We are just going to go out and play tough defense, work hard and see what happens.”

The roster this year shows seniors Brittany Rush, Adrian Gibbs, Courtney Jones, Sha Kiser and Diamond Middleton. Taylor Guthrie and Leah Brundidge are the two juniors and LaTeysia Montgomery is the lone sophomore.

O’Nesha Hall and Shyler Dees make up the roster as the two freshmen.

“For the girls, Courtney Jones is going to be a key player,” Jackson said. “A lot of our success is going to depend on her play and how she leads. She usually works hard and she usually gives 110 percent in practice and that needs to carry over to the games.”

Jackson said Leah Brundidge and Sha Kiser are other key players.

“All of the seniors this year are going to have to step up and be counted,” Jackson said. “Brittany Rush is showing some progress along with newcomer, Adrian Gibbs, who is shooting the ball well right now. I think if we get the nucleus together, they will step up and do some things and everything will fall into line.”

The Lady Tigers will begin play Monday at the Ft. Walton tournament at 8 p.m. against West Florida Tech.

The Lady Tigers will have three games at Choctawhatchee High School’s Thanksgiving tournament while the boys will begin play on the road Nov. 30 at Escambia County.

The Lady Tigers will have 23 games while the boys will have 20. While the girls will begin play in a Thanksgiving tournament and the boys will not, both teams will play in the Escambia County Tournament in Brewton and the Clarke County Christmas tournament.

The schedule shows 15 non-tournament regular season games with seven on the road and eight at home. All games except tournament games will be in the B-team, girls, varsity format.

The Tiger teams will be in an area with Excel, Bayside Academy, Clarke County, and Washington County.
