Holiday dinner is free

After a successful serving of a free Thanksgiving dinner, Brewton resident Lisa Thomas is planning another meal for Christmas day.
Thomas, who prepares lunch for students at Jefferson Davis Community College every day at her Drexel and Honeybee cafe, offered a free Thanksgiving lunch at the college to dozens of area residents.
Now Thomas is gearing up to feed another multitude of people on Christmas Day. Anyone who would like to join her is issued an invitation to The Hourglass, located at 220 St. Joseph Ave., from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday.
“Christmas is a traditional time of giving and that is what we are doing,” Thomas said. “Everyone is welcome, in the true meaning of Christmas, to join in a time of fellowship and love at a special time of the year. We want the community to share in the spirit of the season.”
Thomas said that the dinner at Thanksgiving was a huge success, but the space at the college was not quite enough to feed the crowd that showed up.
Also in the spirit of Christmas, Terrence and Becki Breckenridge have stepped up and offered the use of The Hourglass building to serve the meal.
“Christmas is a time of warm and fuzzy feelings and we still need some volunteers to help make this a little easier,” Thomas said. “We don’t want anyone to be alone or without a good meal on Christmas. The true meaning of Christmas is God’s gift of His Son, Jesus, and sometimes people forget that when they are busy running around and shopping. People tend to forget that there are lots of others who are suffering with the economy being like it is. Maybe we can encourage someone who is going through some hard times. We don’t want to forget that there are plenty of people who are not as well off as others may be.”
Thomas is asking that large groups or those who are disabled to please call ahead with their orders. Call 809-2870 and place an order and then either pick it up or sit down and eat with the others who will be there.
