There are two new top-ranked teams in this week’s Alabama Sports Writers Association boys basketball rankings.
Class 2A Section and AISA Evangel Christian, ranked second last week, ascended to the top spots after last week’s No. 1 teams lost.
In Evangel’s case, the Lions (15-2) did it themselves, winning 63-50 at Restoration (14-1) on Saturday. It was Restoration’s first regular-season loss since the 2008-09 season.
Section (15-3) moved up after Barbour County (17-2) fell 56-55 at Houston County on Saturday.
Class 4A top-ranked Butler (17-2) also lost on Saturday, falling 73-62 to Class 6A sixth-ranked Sparkman. Butler’s other loss is to Class 6A top-ranked Homewood.
In the girls rankings, there were no changes among the leaders with Class 6A Sparkman, Class 5A Erwin, Class 4A Good Hope, Class 3A Madison Academy, Class 2A North Sand Mountain, Class 1A J.F. Shields and AISA Lakeside all staying No. 1.
Class 1A J.F. Shields (13-1) remained No. 1 despite losing its first game of the season, falling to second-ranked Brantley on Tuesday. It was the second meeting of the season between the teams with Shields winning the first.
AISA Lakeside (21-0) is the lone remaining undefeated No. 1 team in the girls rankings.
