Henson Royce McKissack

Mr. Henson Royce McKissack, 84, died Saturday, Jan. 22, 2011. He was a native of Hartford and a resident of Yukon. He was a veteran of World War II serving with the U.S. Air Force. He earned his bachelor’s degree in radio and television production from John Brown University and worked for years as a TV anchor and TV commercial personality in the Tulsa, Okla. area. He worked as a air traffic controller with the Federal Aviation Administration from 1957 until he retired in 1988. He sang barbershop style music for 40 years and sang in the choir of Kelham Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harris and Leila McKissack; a brother, Harris McKissack Jr.; two sisters, Marilyn Kolp and Maxine Bell.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Verla McKissack; three sons, John McKissack of Amarillo, Texas, Roger McKissack of Wimberly, Texas, and Jerry McKissack of Dharan, Saudi Arabia; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; four brothers, Lamar McKissack and Billy McKissack, both of Pensacola, Fla., Jimmy McKissack of Brewton and Bobby McKissack of Wing; two sisters, Jane Fowler of Andalusia, and Geraldine Reilly of Columbus, Ga.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Jan. 25, at 11 a.m. at Kelham Baptist Church in Oklahoma City, Okla. with Smith-Turner Funeral Home directing.
