An Evergreen man has been charged with murder following a car crash that killed a 10-year-old boy, state troopers said.
Dawson Kirksey was pronounced dead at the scene after a 2008 Dodge Ram, driven by Calvin C. Fluker Jr., 61, of Evergreen, struck the rear of a 2007 Pontiac Grand Prix on Conecuh County Road 42, troopers said. Dawson Kirksey was riding in the back seat as his mother, Kimberly Waters Kirksey, 32, of Evergreen was driving, troopers said.
Kimberly Kirksey and front seat passenger Kortlann Kirksey, 7, were also injured.
Troopers said their investigation showed that Kimberly Kirksey’s vehicle was stopped in the roadway after being directed to do so by a paving crew flagman.
After the crash, Fluker approached a flagman at the scene and physically assaulted him, troopers said. The flagman escaped without injury.
Fluker left the scene of the crash in the flagman’s work truck. He was apprehended a mile and a half from the scene by Evergreen Police. He was treated for injuries and then arrested and charged with murder.
Fluker was being held at the Conecuh County Jail on $500,000 bond, troopers said.
Kimberly and Kortlann Kirksey were transported by Life Flight to Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola, where they were being treated for their injuries.
