The W.S. Neal Eagle baseball team improved their overall record to 11-3 Monday at home as they earned an 8-1 win over the Flomaton Hurricanes.
The Eagles pounded out 10 hits included five extra base hits in the win. Of the five extra base hits, three were doubles and two were triples.
While the Eagles hit the ball well in the seven-run win over the Hurricanes, they also used a good trio of pitching from starter and winning pitcher Keith Bradley, Brian Settle, and Dylan Godwin.
The trio allowed only five hits and one run in the win while striking out nine.
Bradley got the start and the win going three innings allowing two hits, no runs, no walks and struck out four.
Settle went two innings allowing two hits, two walks and struck out three while Godwin went the final two innings allowing one hit, one run, walked two and struck out two.
While the win was a good win for the Eagles according to head coach Coy Campbell, it does not mean anything.
“It was a good win for us tonight,” Coy Campbell said. “We have a big area game coming up this week against Jackson and we threw our three guys who we plan on starting this weekend. All three of them threw well and we swung the bats well a little bit tonight. We got 10 or 11 hits. All that really does not matter, as this weekend is the one that really counts. That is what we are trying to get prepared for.”
The Eagles and Hurricanes were deadlocked at a 0-0 tie after the third inning until W.S. Neal plated three runs in the bottom of the third to take a 3-0 lead.
W.S. Neal plated three more runs in the bottom of the fourth to extend their lead to 6-0 heading to the top of the fifth.
After neither team scored in the fifth, Flomaton got their lone run in the top of the sixth to cut the Eagle lead to five. In the bottom of the sixth, the Eagles picked up two insurance runs to claim an 8-1 lead and held the Hurricanes scoreless in the seventh to get the win.
At the plate for the Eagles, Damion Williams was 1-for-3 with a triple and two RBIs and Settle was 2-for-4 with a double and one RBI. Logan Williamson was 1-for-4 with a triple and one RBI in the win.
Hunter Mullins was 1-for-3 and Reid Johnson was 2-for-4 with a double.
Dylan Godwin was 2-for-3 with two singles and Christian Purvis was 1-for-3 with a double.
The Eagles will play at home against Jackson Thursday. The JV Eagles will begin play at 4 p.m. followed by the varsity. Friday, the Eagles will continue their area game with the Aggies, as they will make the trip to Jackson for an area doubleheader at 4 p.m.
W.S. Neal is currently 4-0 in the area and holds the tiebreakers over Monroe County and Hillcrest after sweeping the three game series with them.
Other area games left for W.S. Neal will be Thursday, March 31 and Friday, April 1 against Thomasville. The Eagles will play at Thomasville on Thursday while having the doubleheader in East Brewton that Friday.

WSN JV 10, Flomaton 2
A big third inning for the W.S. Neal junior varsity baseball team kept the Eagles undefeated Monday at home against Flomaton.
The Eagles scored eight runs in the inning to get the win and improve to 4-0-2.
The Eagles led 2-0 after the second inning after scoring one run each in the first two innings.
In the third, W.S. Neal scored eight runs on six hits and no Flomaton errors to take a 10-0 lead.
Flomaton would add one run each in the fourth and fifth innings to cut the lead to 10-2, but W.S. Neal earned the win by eight.
Jeremy Myers got the start and the win on the mound for the Eagles. Myers pitched three innings and allowed one hit, no runs, no walks, and struck out six. Tyler Joyner went the next two innings allowing one hit, one earned run, and one walk.
Cam Blackman went the final inning allowing no hits, one run, none earned, walked one, and struck out two.
Myers and Dalton Smith were both 1-for-2 with a double and two RBIs for the Eagles. Austin Dixon was 1-for-2 with a double and one RBI. Miles Powell was 1-for-2 with one RBI and Taylor Elliott was 1-for-1. Joyner was 1-for-3 and Chase Kaylor had one RBI.
Cam Easterling was 1-for-2 with two RBIs and Jerad Salter was 1-for-2 with one RBI.
