An engineer now overseeing the Belleville Avenue drainage project said the new completion date for the work is June 15.

That is seven months past the original date, which was Dec. 15, said Daniel Wells of CDG Engineers. Martin Construction of Atmore has been doing the work on the project, which was paid for mainly by a Community Development Block Grant.

Wells said the contract stipulates that the city can charge a $500 per day fine for every day the project is over the deadline, but Martin Construction may seek to have some of those days reduced because of some extra cleanup work the city sought.

City Councilman Dennis Dunaway asked if city employees have pitched in on the project.

“There has been a pretty good bit of work on repair or relocation of gas and water lines,” Wells said. “We know about those situations.”

Wells said he has not tracked the cost of that work, butcity utilities director Ray Madden likely has done that.

Work began late last summer on the drainage project.
