In a resumed game from Tuesday at the area softball tournament in Thomasville, the W.S. Neal Lady Eagle softball team saw their season come to an end one game shy of the championship game and missing the Gulf Shores regional as they lost 12-2 to the Jackson Aggies.
With W.S. Neal trailing 4-0 Tuesday in a steady, cold rain, the game was called and resumed Wednesday back in Thomasville in the second inning and W.S. Neal having the bases loaded.
From that point, the Lady Eagles were outscored 8-2 as they lost by 10 runs in five innings to end their season with a 12-12 record.
Kaitlin Hadaway pitched in the loss and faced 31 batters. Hadaway struck out four, hit two and allowed 12 runs with one earned.
At the plate for the Lady Eagles, Haley Lum was 1-for-3 and Kiki Floyd was 1-for-1 with one run scored. Britta Wood had an RBI and Heather Elliott was 1-for-2.
Jade Danley was 2-for-2 with one run scored.
“This was a tough way to end the season,” W.S. Neal Lady Eagle head coach Jeff Haney said. “The umpires not getting us off the field when it was raining got us in a 4-0 hole (Tuesday). But ultimately, it was our errors that cost us the game. We made 16 errors in two games against Jackson in this tournament. That is something that is near impossible to overcome. Leaving the bases loaded twice did not help the cause either.”
Haney said despite the loss, he was proud of the girls for the way they battled through the losers bracket on Tuesday.
“Kaitlin Hadaway went above and beyond the call of duty by throwing over 400 pitches in a two-day span,” Haney said. “She did an amazing job and our defense did a great job in the two games against Monroe County and Hillcrest.”
Haney said this season has been a great year for W.S. Neal softball.
“The girls have worked hard over the past year,” Haney said. “They had a great off-season and have did what was necessary to improve their team. I couldn’t be more proud of this bunch. It is an honor to coach them and I have really enjoyed this season. A 12-12 record is by far the best that we have had at W.S. Neal in fastpitch softball. However, it is still not where we want to be. We will be a playoff team, and our girls are working hard to get there. With the help of Coach Blaney, this program is heading in the right direction. We are already looking forward to next season.”
