For the third straight year, a T.R. Miller Tiger track team brought back a state championship trophy from the AHSAA state track meet.
Saturday in Birmingham, the T.R. Miller Lady Tiger track team earned back-to-back state championships as they won the class 3A state championship with 126 points, 22 more points than second place Bayside Academy.
The Lady Tigers won their first championship last season after finishing runner-up in 2009.
The Lady Tigers led 44-40 over Bayside Academy after day one.
The T.R. Miller boys team fell four points shy to Greensboro (94-90) of earning their third straight state championship.
The boys won titles in 2009 and 2010, but finished as runner-up this year. The boys led 56-33 over Winfield after day one as Greensboro was in third place with 32 points.
The T.R. Miller boys teams has won seven state championships since 1991 and five since 2003. The team won two 4A titles in 1991 and 1992 while taking five 3A titles in 2003, 2004, 2006, 2009, and 2010 and runner-up this year.
For the Lady Tigers, Karisa Nelson won three individual state championships. Nelson took first in the 800-meter, 1600-meter, and 3200-meter races.
For the boys, Anthony Herbert took an individual championship in the triple jump while Madden McCall won the pole vault.
Ryland Dixon won the javelin with a state record throw of 174-7. The previous record throw was 173-2 set last year.
Other athletes placing for the T.R. Miller teams were Leah Brundidge and Onesha Hall in the shot put. Brundidge placed 11th with a throw of 28-5 and Hall had a throw of 26-2 ½.
Trent Robinson placed eighth for the boys in the shot put with a throw of 44-3 ½.
In the discus, Lauren Bradley placed fifth for T.R. Miller with a throw of 84-3 and Sha Kiser placed 17th with a throw of 69-1.
For the boys, Logan Ingram placed second and Dixon fourth. Ingram had a throw of 123-3 and Dixon had a throw of 121-11.
Avery Couture had a throw of 104-10 for 13th place.
In the girls triple jump, Taylor Guthrie placed third (15-9) and Amber Nelson placed sixth (15 3/4)
In the boys long jump, Herbert placed seventh with a jump of 20-9 ¼.
In the girls triple jump, Amber Nelson placed second with a jump of 33-3 ½ and Brundidge placed sixth with a jump of 31-4 ½ while Herbert placed first for the boys and Ivory Miller placed 18th a jump of 37-1.
In the boys high jump, Mark Bryant placed third with a jump of 5-10 and Devonte Jones placed eighth with a jump of 5-8.
In girls pole vault, Shelby Kiser placed fourth with a vault of 7-6 and DeAudra Hetherington placed 10th with a vault of 6-6.
In the boys pole vault, T.R. Miller placed 1-2 behind McCall’s win of 12’ and Dakota Shultz’s vault of 11-6. Spencer Waldrep placed ninth with a vault of 9-6.
In girls javelin, Brundidge placed second with a throw of 111-2 and Dixon placed first for the boys while Nick Adams placed ninth with a throw of 139-11.
In the girls 400-meter dash, Shelby Youngblood placed fourth with a time of 1:02.89 and Emmy Granade placed 17th with a time of 1:08.41.
Wil Riggs placed fifth in the boys 400-meter dash with a time of 52.78.
In the girls, 100-meter hurdles, Guthrie placed second with a time of 17.11 and Amber Nelson placed third with a time of 17.23.
In the finals of boys 110-meter hurdles, Herbert placed second with a time of 15.12. For the Lady Tigers in the 300-meter hurdles, Guthrie placed second with a time of 48.40 followed by Amber Nelson with a time of 48.97. Granade placed 12th with a time of 54.10.
In the boys 300-meter hurdles, Adams placed eighth with a time of 44.99 and Horatio Matthews placed 12th with a time of 46.11.
Karisa Nelson led T.R. Miller in the 800 with a time of 2:24.09 and also took first in the 1600-meter with a time of 5:26.29 followed by Katie Nelson in fifth with a time of 5:49.77.
In the boys 1600-meter run, Rob Stokes placed 11th with a time of 5:04.29 while Karisa Nelson placed first in the 3200 with a time of 11:34.44 and Katie Nelson placed third with a time of 12:24.12.
The girls 4×100-meter relay team placed fourth with a time of 53.21while the boys placed second with a time of 44.12. The girls 4×400-meter relay team placed fourth with a time of 4:28.33.
The Tigers 4×400-meter relay team placed second with a time of 3:32.63 and the girls 4×800-meter team placed second behind Bayside with a time of 10:27.65.
The boys team placed 15th with a time of 9:50.10
