11-12 DIVISION
YANKEES 13, ORIOLES 12 (9 INNINGS)
Despite yet another impressive pitching performance from Orioles pitcher Hunter Brittain – who had 17 strikeouts in six innings of work – the Brewton Yankees were able to push the game into extra innings, overcome a 12-7 deficit in the eighth, and finally win it in the bottom of the ninth when Preston Townsend smacked a walk-off double down the leftfield line that scored Jason Konsler.
For the Yankees, who faced deficits of 4-0 (first inning), 7-4 (second) and 12-7 (eighth), the only lead they enjoyed came on Townsend’s game-winner. This extra-inning game – in which they registered eight hits from the seventh inning on – was the Yankees’ fourth in their last five games, all of which they’ve won.
The Orioles had taken a seemingly insurmountable 12-7 lead in the top of the eighth, with the big blow being a three-run home run by Brittain (his third against the Yankees this year). But the Yankees countered with three doubles to score a pair of runs before Troy Lewis – who had been 0-4 coming into his last at-bat – crushed a three-run home run, the first of his career, to knot it back up at 12-12. That set up Townsend’s heroics in the bottom of the ninth. In the matter of just a few pitches, Konsler hit a double in the right-centerfield gap and Townsend followed with a double of his own to chase home the winning run.
The Orioles jumped out early to take a lead when their lethal top four batters of Jordan Williams, Brittain, Stokes Jennings and Russell Smith, who accounted for all of their team’s six hits, did what they have done all year … get on base and score. Williams led off and reached on an error, Brittain was hit by a pitch and Jennings and Smith followed with consecutive singles en route to a 4-0 lead. The Yankees countered by tying it in the bottom of the inning, only to watch as the Orioles’ Jared Baker and Kishon Patel drew walks to lead off the top of the second before Williams belted his first career homer – a three-run bomb – to give his team the 7-4 advantage.
The Yankees chipped away and scored two runs in the fourth and another in the fifth to tie it at 7-7. In the fourth, Joseph Nance singled and he and Steven McCall eventually scored, before Caleb Winton led off the fifth with a single and scored on Joshua Winton’s RBI fielder’s choice to send the game into bonus baseball.
Both teams had the go-ahead or winning run on second base in the seventh inning, but neither was able to push that run across, setting the stage for the exciting eighth inning and then the deciding ninth.
For the Orioles, Williams had a pair of hits – including his home run – and four RBIs, while Smith added two hits and two RBIs and Brittain and Stokes had the other two hits. The Yankees’ 12-hit attack was led by Konsler, who had three hits, while both Caleb Winton and Nance each had two. Lewis, Townsend, Ty McFerrin, McCall and Hayden Atkinson each had a hit apiece. On the mound, Caleb Winton, Konsler and Townsend combined for 20 strikeouts before Townsend eventually earned the win with six strikeouts over the last two innings.
