Taking a look back at the 2010-2011 team sports records

Whoever said time flies when you are having fun was right. The last time I blogged was on February 24 and that blog was about the arrival of spring sports.
More than three months later, I sit at my desk this Wednesday, June 1, and spring sports are over minus two games left on the schedule.
As sports writers, this is the time of the year where sports gets a little bare. While the break is enjoyed, we are now at the time where we have to pull anything and everything out of the cupboards to write about until all-star games pick up and summer workouts begin for the upcoming 2011-2012 fall sports like football and volleyball.
While I had a little time on my hands today, I thought I would look at how our local teams did during their 2010-2011 seasons.
For our high schools—T.R. Miller and W.S. Neal—I keep a list of their records in their particular school year. I keep records of nine teams (volleyball, football, boys basketball, girls basketball, B-team basketball, baseball, softball, and boys and girls tennis).
Of the nine sports for T.R. Miller this year, six had winning records while two had losing and one had an even win-loss record.
W.S. Neal had seven losing records, one winning and one even.
Winning records for T.R. Miller teams were volleyball (20-11), football (8-4), girls basketball (21-6), baseball (13-7), softball (23-15) and girls tennis (7-5). The two losing teams were boys basketball (6-16) and B-team basketball (4-9). The boys tennis team broke even going 6-6.
Overall, T.R. Miller’s teams went 108-79. Other non-record sports were the girls cross country team winning state runner-up while the boys track team also took runner-up. The girls track team won their second straight state title.
For W.S. Neal, the one winning team was the baseball team that went 21-8 and the even record team was softball at 12-12.
Other sports were volleyball (7-16), football (0-10), boys basketball (4-23), girls basketball (5-19), B-team basketball (2-15), and boys and girls tennis both going 0-6.
The overall record for W.S. Neal sports this season was 51-115.
For the sports at Jefferson Davis Community College (JDCC), overall the four teams went 63-98-1 overall and 29-56 in conference play. Overall JDCC had two losing seasons, one winning and one even overall while three losing in conference and one winning.
JDCC volleyball went 2-22 overall and 1-14 in conference play while basketball went 14-13 overall and 10-6 in conference play.
Baseball went 17-33-1 overall and 7-23 in conference play while softball went 30-30 overall and 11-13 in conference play.
It is always a sad time to see the high school and college sports seasons end. I am anxiously awaiting the arrival for the 2011 seasons to begin.
Until we meet again here or out in the world of sports, God bless.
