In a four-team summer play date for the T.R. Miller Lady Tiger softball team Friday at the YMCA Sports Park, T.R. Miller went 2-0 before weather cancelled the remaining two games.
The one-day softball event was set to be a seven-team affair including T.R. Miller, but saw the lineup of teams drop to four teams.
Originally along with the Lady Tigers, Pleasant Home, Gulf Shores, Thomasville, Baldwin County, Opp, and Flomaton were set to play in the tournament, but Flomaton, Gulf Shores and Opp dropped out leaving, T.R. Miller, Baldwin County, Pleasant Home, and Thomasville.
In game one for T.R. Miller, the Lady Tigers defeated Pleasant Home 7-4. In game two, the Lady Tigers edged out Baldwin County 5-4.
After a short break, the Lady Tigers were in the first inning of their game against Thomasville with the game tied at 0-0 when the rains came and cancelled the rest of the scheduled games.
“Too much rain too fast,” White said of his reasoning on calling the final games off. “While we were unable to finish the tournament today, I was very pleased with how the girls came out and played today. From the first inning of the first game we came out swinging and did a pretty good job of it in both games. Taylor Guthrie is out with an injury and once again Laurel Billy stepped up and did a great job pitching for us today. We had a few errors in the field but we had several big plays also. We have a lot of work to do, but I think this tournament showed that we have a pretty good nucleus to work from. I’m proud that they made a sacrifice on a hot Friday afternoon in the summer to play softball. That shows me that they are dedicated to what we are doing and that they want to get better as a team.”
While White said he was proud of his team for their work Friday, he is also proud of the way they are responding to summer workouts.
“These girls have bought into our off-season and summer conditioning program and I feel that is the major contributor to any success that we have had in the past or may have in the future,” White said. “Participation for summer workouts has been great. We have 30 girls in our program (softball and volleyball combined) and there has not been a workout where we have had less than 25 there. The ones that are not there are either on family vacations or church trips. We work out two days a week for a little over two hours a day in the weight-room and on the track. We also mix in some sport specific (softball or volleyball) skill work during that time also. These girls understand that if you want to get better you have to work at it and if you don’t work at it you’re not going to get better.”

TRM 7, Pleasant Home 4
In their first game of the summer play date tournament Friday against Pleasant Home, the Lady Tigers won 7-4.
T.R. Miller, who was the visiting team, scored three runs in the first inning and four in the second while holding Pleasant Home to one run in the bottom of the first and three in the bottom of third as the Lady Tigers earned the win by three in three innings. (Games were five innings or a one-hour time limit.)
Billy earned the win on the mound going the complete game three innings on the mound for the Lady Tigers. Billy allowed three hits, four runs, two earned, walked none, hit one and struck out three.
At the plate for the Lady Tigers, Audrey Hamric was 2-for-3 and Takeysia McFugerson was 1-for-2 with one RBI.
Jessica Allan was 2-for-2 with one RBI and Moriah Brundidge was 1-for-3 with a triple and two RBIs in the first inning for the Lady Tigers.

Game two: TRM 5, Baldwin County 4
With the score tied 4-4 in the bottom of the third inning a key hit Leah Brundidge and some smart base running gave the Lady Tigers one run in the bottom of the inning to get the win.
In the inning, Brundidge hit a single and caught the defense not paying attention and stole second on the pitcher. From there, the pitcher threw the ball to second base, but nobody was there to catch it and the ball rolled into center field to score Brundidge as she came around and scored the game-winning run.
Billy earned the win on the mound going three innings and allowing seven hits, struck out two, and walked none.
Hamric was 2-for-2 with one run scored and Brundidge was 1-for-2 with one run scored and one RBI.
Lauren Ward was 1-for-2 with one run scored and one RBI in the win.
