A man who tried to lure two girls into his car at Walmart a year ago won’t spend time behind bars.
Jereme Adams pleaded guilty last week to one charge of willful abuse of a child. He was originally charged with two counts of enticing a child to enter a vehicle after he approached the two teenagers on June 2, 2010.
According to court records, Adams was sentenced to 10 years. However, the sentence was split allowing him to serve three years in community correction and two years of supervised probation.
Brewton Police Sgt. Steven Ferguson said Adams was arrested after published photos of the suspect were identified.
“We ran his name through our system and obtained a photograph,” Ferguson said after the arrest. “We took it to Walmart and several employees were able to identify the man. One of the girls who had been accosted was also able to identify him.”
Adams, a Brewton resident, was arrested at his place of employment in Castleberry where he was charged as a suspect in the crimes.
“The girls involved in this case had said a man stopped and talked with them,” Ferguson said. “The girls said they were also hugged and inappropriate language was used. He then followed them throughout the store. When they left, he followed them outside where he tried to entice them to get into a car.”
Adams pled guilty to the lesser charge of willful abuse of a child Thursday and was immediately sentenced for the crime.
The original charges would have required Adams to register as a sex offender if he had been convicted.
