Three Brewton residents were arrested last week in connection with a shooting and stabbing during a block gathering on Martin Luther King Avenue near Sportsman Park.
Arrested were Timothy Duncan, 54 of Grandberry Street; Lavonda Jenkins, 31 of Washington Circle; and Ruthie Monroe, 44, of Martin Luther King Drive.
Each of the suspects was arrested on assault charges in separate incidents that occurred during the event.
Sgt. Steven Ferguson with the Brewton Police Department said the block party was intended to be a family-friendly gathering that included cookouts and a car show.
The incident that led to the arrests occurred late in the afternoon near the rear of the Sportsman Park facility.
“When I got to the location there was a large crowd gathered,” Ferguson said. “I assumed there was a fight. When I was told someone had been shot, I called for backup from other officers.”
Fergu-son said a person at the event came to him as he sat at the entrance to the event on Martin Luther King Avenue in an effort to restrict traffic around the event location.
Ferguson said the victim of the shooting incident was transported to D.W. McMillan Hospital by private vehicle and was treated for what appeared to be non-lethal injuries. Police did not reveal the identity of the victim.
Jenkins and Monroe were each responsible for stabbing or cutting their victims following the shooting incident, Ferguson said.
Jenkins reportedly was an occupant in a vehicle when she approached the victim of the cutting. Witnesses provided video footage to police that showed Jenkins using a box cutter to slash the victim in the upper torso.
Monroe is believed to have used a weapon to cut and stab the alleged victim. As police interviewed Monroe, she told officers the victim “looked at me wrong” and said the attack was meant for someone other than the victim.
Ferguson said an investigation into the incident is continuing and could result in evidence to show a third stabbing may have occurred at the event.
As offers arrived on the scene revelers were forced to leave the event with the entire area cleared by 7:30 p.m., Ferguson said.
“We will continue to investigate the situation,” Ferguson said.
Duncan was charged with first-degree assault, which is a felony charge. He was transported to the Escambia County Detention Center where he was booked on the charge. He remained behind bars Friday in lieu of a $100,000 bond.
Jenkins was charged with second-degree assault and was transported to the Escambia County Detention Center. She was released on a $10,000 bond.
Monroe was charged with second-degree assault and was transported to the Escambia County Detention Center where she remained Friday in lieu of a $10,000 bond.
