Traffic stops at the start of the July 4 holiday weekend netted arrests of two men on a variety of drug charges, Brewton police said.

Arthur Lee Woods, 57, was arrested during a traffic stop just after 1 p.m. Friday when Sgt. Andrew Casey stopped the vehicle at the intersection of Sowell Road and McLellan Street.

Casey, a member of the Brewton Police Narcotics Division, identified Woods and began a search of the vehicle. Discovered were crack cocaine, marijuana, Lortab, Oxycodone pills and a variety of drug paraphernalia items, police said

“Woods was charged with possession of a controlled substance, Lortab, Oxycodone and cocaine and first degree possession of marijuana,” Casey said. “He was also charged with possession of drug paraphernalia.”

Woods was transported to the Escambia County Detention Center, where he was booked on the charges.

Brewton Police officers assisting in the traffic stop and vehicle search were Lt. Bryan Davis, Agent Russell Clausell, Officer Eddie Barton and K-9 officer Drako.

A second traffic stop on Friday sent another Brewton man to jail on drug charges as well.

Jerry Leon Smith, 50, was identified as the passenger in a vehicle stopped by Clausell on Douglas Avenue just before 7 p.m.

Clausell said in his search of Smith, a pill bottle was discovered with a variety of pills inside.

Clausell said the pill bottle’s label had been removed and contained two different kinds of pills. The pills were determined to be Lortab, he said.

Smith was taken into custody and charged with possession of a controlled substance. He was transported to the Escambia County Detention Center where he was booked on the charges.

Assisting in the traffic stop and search of Smith were Officer William Mosley and K-9 Drako.

Smith was released on a $5,000 bond. Woods remains in the Escambia County Detention Center in lieu of a $15,000 bond.
