Tigershark swim team places in Gulf Shores meet

The Brewton Tigersharks recently attended the G.C.A.A.L. League Championships held in Gulf Shores.
The Tigersharks had an “amazing weekend of swimming” placing second overall in their division scoring 737 points over the two-day meet. The Tigersharks came in second to the Gulf Shores Dolphins, who had 56 participants in the meet and beating out Foley, Orange Beach and Bay Minette in total points scored at this weekend’s championship. Coach Angel Boyd reported that the Brewton Local Area Swim Team was the second smallest team in numbers, but they “rocked the blocks” and took second in a tough division overall
The following Tigersharks participated in this past weekends meet: Nolan Atkinson, Mac Baxter, Payton Baxter, Kinsley Byrd, Jocelyn Carpenter, Caleb Kent, Callie Kent, Alex Lund, Colby Morris, Cobi Godwin, Addison Heath, Adrian Howell, Auburn Jernigan, Rider Jernigan, Cole Jernigan, John Braxton Rhodes, Sara Scott, Sailor Smith, Makenzie Thomas, and Daniel Todd.
The kids swam their hearts out this weekend,” assistant coach Brandee Morris said. “We took 20 swimmers to the championships this weekend and won high point in four divisions. We are so proud.”
Claiming wins for Brewton at the swim meet was:
Boys 7-year old High Point Winner:
Nolan Atkinson medaled in five individual events and two relays and brought home the High Point Trophy. Nolan is the Son of Rob and Lisa Atkinson

Boys 8-year-old High Point Winner:
Mac Baxter took home firs place medals in five individual events as well as two relay medals and brought home the High Point Trophy. Mac is the son of Chris and Angel Baxter.

Boys 9-year-old High Point Winner:
Cole Jernigan medaled in all five individual events as well as one relay medal and brought home the High Point Trophy. Cole is the son of Lee and Felicia Jernigan

Boys 10-year-old High Point Winner:
Colby Morris took home first place medals in all five individual events and one relay medal, winning High Point Trophy. Colby is the Son of Brandee L. Morris
Also, placing in the top-5 in their respective age groups, were several outstanding swimmers from the Tigersharks Team:
Payton Baxter placed fourth in the high point race for 12-year-old girls, scoring 30 points and medaling in several events. Payton is the daughter of Chris and Angel Baxter. Makenzie Thomas medaled and placed fourth overall in the 7-year-old girls division scoring 51 points. Makenzie is the daughter of Tabitha Barlow and Jackson Thomas.
Sara Scott medaled and placed fifth overall in the 8-year-old girls division scoring 48 points. Sara is the daughter of Doug and Sheila Scott.
Four of our Tigersharks in the 6U Division did exceptional this weekend, Boyd said, and placed in every event they swam and making us so very proud. Those six were: Kinsley Byrd, Callie Kent, Addison Heath and Daniel Todd.
Also, other stand out swimmers in their respective age groups were 7-year-old Caleb Kent who scored 30 points and placed sixth overall in points winning several individual medals as well as relay medals. Sailor Smith finished in the top-12, 8-year-old girls, also medaled in several events this weekend.
Many Tigersharks set personal best times at this weekend’s Championship Meet. The following is list of those swimmers: Payton Baxter, Mac Baxter, Caleb Kent, Alex Lund, John Braxton Rhodes, Auburn Jernigan, Cobi Godwin, Kinsley Byrd, Daniel Todd, Caleb Kent, Makenzie Thomas, Nolan Atkinson, Colby Morris, Jocelyn Carpenter, Callie Kent and Sara Scott.

Jernigan and Morris excel in Knoxville:
Colby Morris, 10, and Cole Jernigan, 9, members of the Brewton Local Area Swim Team Tigersharks recently competed in the Southeastern Long Course Meet of Champions held in Knoxville.
Colby, son of Brandee Morris, competed in seven individual events in the meet, swimming the 400M freestyle, 200M freestyle 100M freestyle, 50M freestyle, 50M Backstroke, 50M Breaststroke and the 200M Individual Medley.
Cole, son of Lee and Felicia Jernigan, competed in five individual events is the meet, swimming the 200M freestyle, 100M freestyle, 50M freestyle, 100M Backstroke 50M Backstroke and the 100M Individual Medley.
“Both athletes represented Brewton amazingly,” Boyd said. “Just getting to this level was a feat within itself, but to go to Knoxville and compete with over 1,500 swimmers throughout the Southeastern U.S. and your average swims put you in the top-40 is simply amazing.”
Morris placed in the top-11 swimmers in the 400M free, top-22 in the 100M freestyle, top-32 50M back, top-26 in the 200M free and top-32 in 200M IM.
Jernigan, a young 9-year-old competing in a tough 10U division also swam a great meet placing in the top-30 50M Back, top-39 200M IM, top-28 and personal best time in 100 BK and top-40 100M freestyle also, with a personal best swim.
“These boys have worked extremely hard to get to this level of competition,” Boyd said. “They are the first male swimmers from our city to ever make the cuts for a Long Course Championship meet, and we are extremely proud of them both.”
