Malcolm Hawthorne ran for 148 yards on 14 carries and scored three touchdowns for the W.S. Neal Eagle Middle School team as they cruised their way to a 40-6 home win over Brewton Middle School Tuesday night at W.S. Neal Stadium in East Brewton.
The win for W.S. Neal improved them to 4-2 while Brewton fell to 2-3 overall.
W.S. Neal led Brewton 14-0 after the first quarter of play and 32-0 at the half. W.S. Neal would add their final touchdown in the third quarter to claim a 40-0 lead over Brewton. The Tigers would get their lone touchdown of the game in the final quarter of the game to cut the lead to 40-6, but W.S. Neal would claim the win by 34 points.
It did not take the Eagles long to get on the board as they scored on their second play from scrimmage when Quenton Samuel scored on a 30-yard run with 7:34 left in the quarter.
After a Brewton punt, Hawthorne went 78 yards on play for the Eagles to put them on top 14-0 after a successful two-point conversion with 5:49 left in the first quarter.
In the second quarter, W.S. Neal would go on top 20-0 with an 18-yard run score with 4:40 left before the half.
Following a Brewton punt, the Eagles used a two-play drive to get a 30-yard pass reception from quarterback Lane Chavers to Samuel to put the Eagles on top 26-0 with 1:29 left before the half.
Following a Brewton fumble, Chavers got a 2-yard score for the Eagles with 6.8 seconds left before the half to give the Eagles a 32-0 lead.
To start the second half, Brewton turned the ball over on downs and the Eagles responded with a four-pay drive to get a 19-yard score from Hawthorne with 3:03 left in the quarter to go on top 40-0 over the Tigers.
Brewton’s lone score came on a 14-yard run from Tamerick Jenkins to cut the lead to 40-6 late in the game.
The Eagles racked up 297 yards of offense in the win with 218 coming on the ground and 79 in the air. W.S. Neal had 221 yards rushing in the first half and minus-3 in the second half.
In the air, W.S. Neal had 30 yards in the first half and 49 in the second.
Hawthorne led W.S. Neal with 148 yards on 14 carries and three touchdowns. Samuel had 68 yards on five carries and a touchdown while Chavers had two yards on one carry and a touchdown.
Samuel had 50 yards receiving on three catches and one touchdown and Derrick Barton had one catch for 29 yards.
Chavers was 3-for-4 passing with 50 yards and one touchdown and Hawthorne was 1-for-1 passing with 29 yards.
For Brewton, the Tigers were held to 83 total yards of offense with 80 coming on the ground and 3 in the air.
Brewton had 28 yards rushing in the first half and 52 in the second while having all 3 passing yards in the first half.
Jenkins led Brewton with 92 yards rushing on 18 carries and one touchdown. Ahmaud Taylor had six yards on three carries and Anterio Drakeford had nine yards on five carries.
Three Tigers had negative yards rushing on seven combined attempts.
Joseph Booker was 1-for-3 passing three yards to Drakeford.
In the seventh grade quarter Tuesday night, the Eagles and the Tigers tied 8-8.
To start the game, W.S. Neal used a six-play drive before turning the ball over on downs to the Tigers.
After a Brewton penalty, the Tigers ran one play before turning the ball over to the Eagles on their own 43-yard line.
From there, the Eagles used a nine-play drive to get a 17-yard score from Daquain Kiser to lead 8-0 after the two-point conversion with 1:14 left to play.
After the Eagle score, Brewton took over and used a two-play drive to get a 65-yard touchdown run from Marcus Paul as time expired to cut the Eagle lead to 8-6 with no time left on the clock.
Needing the two-point conversion to tie the game, quarterback Caleb Winton hooked up with brother Joshua Winton in the back of the end zone for the conversion to tie the game at 8-8.
Brewton finished with 66 total yards of offense in the tied getting 65 yards and touchdown from Paul and one yard from Joshua Gunter.
Caleb Winton was 0-for-1 passing in the game before converting the conversion.
For the Eagles, W.S. Neal had 59 yards of total offense, all on the ground.
Kiser had 46 yards on 11 carries and one touchdown and TyShawn Davis had two carries for seven yards.
Peyton Salter had one carry for no yards in the tie and La’Dre Lawson had one carry for six yards.
W.S. Neal will conclude their season next week on Thursday, Oct. 13 when they travel to Monroe County for a 6 p.m. game.
Brewton will also conclude their schedule next week as they are scheduled to take on Perdido in Bay Minette. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
