The 2011-2012 Jefferson Davis Community College Warhawk basketball team will begin their season Saturday on the road at Pensacola.
The Warhawks played in the LBW Jamboree Saturday and head coach Allen Gainer said things went well.
“We won two games and lost one,” Gainer said.
This year, the Warhawks return eight players and have six new comers.
Returning players for JDCC include Brandon Scott, Turmonte Ragland, Gabriel Rice, Larel Jackson, Sherman Presswood, Adam Stumpf, Malcolm Bell, and Derell Washington.
“Brandon is a 6-2 wing player from New Market, Ala,” Gainer said. He made All South Division last year. He has high character on and off the floor and pushes everyone to get better. Turmonte is a 6-11 wing player from Millbrook. He has worked hard on his game over the summer and has greatly improved his perimeter scoring ability. I look for him to be one of our most exciting players for fans to watch. Gabriel is a 6-5 player from York, Ala. He is an outstanding rebounder, soft touch around the post, and extended his range to the 3-point line over the summer. Could be on of the top players in our area this year.”
Gainer says Larel Jackson will play point guard this year.
“Larel is a 6-1 player from Redbay, Fla.,” Gainer said. “He will take over the point guard duties this year. Has very high basketball IQ and knows what to run when. He will be the leader of the team. Sherman is a 6-0 player from Cuba, Ala. He is an exciting scorer that can get to the rim at will. Adam is a 6-6 player from Pensacola. He has worked hard in preseason to improve his scoring. He is a strong post defender and solid rebounder. Malcolm Bell is a 6-1 player from Chipley in Florida. His speed will be used as a factor in our pressure defense. Highly competitive, intense player. Derell Washington is a 6-2 player from Milton. He is a multi use player with ability to guard any of the five positions. Should be a strong contributor this year.”
New players for the Warhawks this year include D.J. Jackson, Rodney Scott, Regis Timmons, R.J. Bowers, Jermaine Williams, and Sedric Rudolph.
“D.J. is a 6-5 player from New Market,” Gainer said. “He is a transfer from Shelton. He scores inside and out and a solid post defender. Rodney Scott is a 5-10 player from Montgomery. He is a talented point guard that will get major minutes backing up Larel. Regis is a 6-2 player from Birmingham. He is an undersized post player that makes up for size by playing with a ton of heart. Getting better each day in practice. Bowers is a 6-0 player from Marianna, Fla. Maybe the best shooter on the team. Understands our defenses better than most freshmen and will see playing time because of it. Jermaine is a 5-9 player from Leroy, Ala. and is a zone busting shooter. Sedric is a 6-2 player from Ft. Walton. He is a talented wing with skill set similar to Brandon Scott.”
JDCC is coming off one of their best seasons last year as they went 14-13 overall and went 10-6 in conference making it to the second round of the regional tournament.
The Warhawks began their season on the road in Andalusia, playing in the LBW preseason Jamboree over the weekend.
