A community Thanksgiving service planned for Sunday in Brewton will offer food, fellowship and song as a community choir gives thanks.
And later this month, East Brewton churches will also welcome the holiday season with a Thanksgiving service as well. That service will be held Nov. 20.
The Brewton service will be held at Christ Kingdom Ministry Center on Douglas Avenue.
The Community Thanksgiving Celebration will mix food, fellowship and song, with services inside and outside in the parking lot. There will be no charge for the events, but organizers are asking everyone to bring canned food to add to the community food bank.
According to co-organizer Betty Queen, several choir directors got together and planned the evening of fellowship for the various congregations.
“Several of the choir directors in town thought it would be good to have a combined Thanksgiving service and decided to get together for fellowship, church service and singing at Christ Kingdom,” Queen said. “We wanted to make it a family program so the children would be able to have some fun.”
The events will begin at 5 p.m. with food, fellowship and children’s activities outside. Thanks to local churches, there will be no charge for the celebration. Participants are encouraged to bring lawn chairs for comfort and blankets in case the weather is a little cool.
There will be a service inside the building at 6 p.m., and the community choir will be joined by those attending  who wish to participate. The music will be easy to follow, allowing everyone to join in singing.
“This is the third year that we have held a service like this,” choir member Patty Neal said. “We want everyone to come and join with us in singing. Many of the local churches have joined together to have a good time and collect canned goods to go into the food bank.”
East Brewton has a tradition that goes back more than 30 years. The community service rotates from church to church, and this year, it will be held at First United Methodist Church of East Brewton on Forrest Avenue.
The Rev. George Weaver, pastor First United Methodist in East Brewton, said he knows it has been a part of the holidays to get together and give thanks to God for all that they have received.
“We have six churches that are participating this year,” Weaver said. “We will begin at 6 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in East Brewton and after the service there, we will go to the East Brewton Civic Center for refreshments and the lighting of the Christmas tree in the park. This is a great tradition for the people to come together and be thankful.”
