East Brewton police have solved two burglary mysteries in the city and believe they have the suspect responsible for a third incident in custody.

Corey Spears, 20, of Beasley Street in East Brewton was arrested and charged with third degree criminal trespassing, two counts of third-degree burglary, two counts of third-degree theft of property and illegal possession of a credit/debit card.

Sgt. Clemente Brooks said the arrest was made last week that helped put the mystery of the burglaries to rest.

“We were conducting investigations into three burglaries when we got this break,” Brooks said. “In one of the cases, the victim and a child were returning to their home when the suspect fled from the house. It could have been a dangerous situation.”

Brooks said information lead to the arrest of Spears and evidence recovered upon his arrest lead to the charges in the cases.

“When we arrested him we found items on him at the time that connected him with two of the cases we had been investigating,” Brooks said. “We are continuing an investigation into the third burglary case and we also recovered evidence that we believe connects him to that case as well.”

Brooks said residents should take special considerations at their homes to protect property from such burglaries.

“It only takes a few minutes to double check locks around the house,” Brooks said. “By being extra careful and making sure that doors and windows are locked you can cut down on the possibility of being the victim of a burglary.”

Brooks said investigation into other reports of burglary and theft are continuing.

Spears was transported to the Escambia County Detention Center where he was booked on the charges. Bond was set at $15,000 on each of the two cases.
